Right now, as you read these words, there is a new Paul Thomas Anderson movie in a number of theaters across the country.  That in and of itself is something to be excited about, but the fact that Inherent Vice is so damn good makes it even better.  While Anderson has developed a reputation of late as someone who doesn’t do a ton of interviews, he’s been fairly visible in the build-up to Inherent Vice’s wide release, including a must-listen appearance on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast.  But if you’re in the mood for something a bit shorter and more visual, Vice has posted a 20-minute video interview with Anderson that touches on a number of topics.  The filmmaker talks about the themes and production process of Inherent Vice, offering up an amusing comparison of making a movie to a “junkie mentality”, in that he and his crew are always chasing that next moment when everything clicks and things are going great.  He also discusses a scene that was completely reimagined on set after the initial set-up wasn’t working.

It’s an insightful interview, especially if you’re a fan of Anderson’s, so check it out after the jump.  Inherent Vice is now playing in over 400 theaters across the country.
