Screenwriting’s dynamic duo of Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Zombieland, Deadpool) have been tapped to helm the adaptation of the graphic novel Cowboy Ninja Viking, a tale of a schizophrenic assassin possessing the western grit of a cowboy, the deadly skills of a ninja and the berserker rage of a Viking.

Deadline is reporting that Disney has purchased the feature pitch for the Image Comics property, written by A.J. Lieberman and artist Riley Rossmo. In addition to their writing credits on Cowboy Ninja Viking, Wernick and Reese will also be producing alongside Mark Gordon and Management 360. Hit the jump for more deadly triple combos.

Though I’m not personally familiar with this comic, having the adaptation in the hands of the same writers responsible for Zombieland and the much-buzzed-about Deadpool treatment can only lead to good things. Since there is little other news on the movie just yet, I’ll dig into the source material a little more.

I enjoyed Rossmo’s work in the comic series Proof but I remember it more for the story than the art itself. Lieberman is generally known for his work in the Batman universe, especially for his contributions to the Hush storyline and Batman: Gotham Knights. Cowboy Ninja Viking promises to be a humorous, yet insane, departure from those darker tomes.

If you’d like to read more about Cowboy Ninja Viking in the creator’s own words, check out an interview with A.J. Lieberman over at Comic Vine.

And just for fun, post your own “assassin triplets” in the comments below. My favorites from the comic are: “Pirate Gladiator Oceanographer” and “Davy Crockett – Marine – Chili’s Waiter.” Ridiculous! (In a good way. I mean that in a good way!)
