Despite the fact that 2008′s “Death Race” made only $36 million at the domestic box office, director Paul W.S. Anderson is gearing up for another lap. He wants a prequel exploring the origins of Jason Statham’s character, Frankenstein. Hit the jump for all the pertinent details.
According to ShockTillYouDrop, Anderson has turned to Tony Giglio, his second unit director on the upcoming “Resident Evil: Afterlife”, to write the screenplay for the untitled prequel. Giglio, who may ultimately serve as the film’s director as well, will be working from an original idea of Anderson’s for his screenplay although both films are based on the 1975 cult classic “Death Race 2000″.
Anderson and Jeremy Bolt’s Impact Pictures will be producing but with the lukewarm reception that the first film received there is almost no chance that Universal will get back in the “Death Race” business. The article also fails to mention if Jason Statham will be involved again. I’m not sure what kind of a draw a “Death Race” prequel would be without Statham but – then again – the first movie wasn’t much of a draw with him so who knows?
