There had been talk of a Pee-wee Herman resurgence in recent years, and that talk heated up when Judd Apatow took it upon himself to help develop and produce a new Pee-wee movie. It took some time to come to fruition, but earlier this year production began on the feature film Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, with Paul Reubens reprising the titular role. The vague logline revealed that the picture would find Pee-wee taking his first-ever holiday after being inspired by a mysterious stranger, leading to “an epic story of friendship and destiny.”

Directed by John Lee (Broad City), the movie is set to debut exclusively on Netflix, but we haven’t heard much more about it in recent months. However, when Steve recently spoke with Joe Maganiello at the press day for Magic Mike XXL, the actor revealed who he plays in Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, and it’s a crucial role:

-

“What an honor to star opposite Pee-wee, and be in scenes opposite Pee-wee. And this wasn’t a stunt cast, mind you. This isn’t like I show up for a day, kind of get in-get out. It’s a major role, I play Pee-wee’s best friend. It’s a lot of responsibility.”

Manganiello went on to tease the story for this new film, which he likens to the classic Pee-wee’s Big Adventure:

“It is a big adventure [laughs]. It’s this big, kind of wild ride; this trip, this journey that Pee-wee goes on much like Big Adventure was. It reminds you of all of those reasons why we were obsessed with Big Adventure growing up, and obsessed with Pee-wee’s Playhouse. All of that is in there, but it’s a completely new and kind of updated version with a couple of winks back to other storylines.”

We still don’t have a release date for Pee-wee’s Big Holiday yet, but it’s possible Netflix could release the film later this year or sometime early next year.

Look for Steve’s full interview with Manganiello on Collider soon.
