Peter Dinklage to Play Villain in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

     February 14, 2013

X-Men: Days of Future Past is raising my expectations too high.  Judging by his latest interview with Steve, Bryan Singer looks like he hasn’t missed a beat when it comes to the franchise, and he’s assembled an amazing cast.  The film only got stronger yesterday when we learned that Emmy-winner Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) had joined the film.  While it was speculated that he would be playing the Alpha Flight character “Puck”, today we’ve learned that Dinklage has landed the villain role.

Hit the jump for more including speculation on who he might play.  The film also stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, and Hugh JackmanX-Men: Days of Future Past opens July 18, 2014.

bolivar-trask-x-men-sentinelsAccording to Variety, Dinklage will play the “main antagonist”.  I’m not sure if that means he’ll be the only bad guy, but all of the other X-Men films have had a lead bad guy and then powerful underlings (even if they weren’t acting under their own volition like in X2).  At the very least, we know that the Sentinels (giant robots who exterminate mutants) will be a “big feature” of the story.

So who will Dinklage play?  Devin Faraci over at Badass Digest made the interesting argument that the villain could be the bizarre Mr. Sinister.  Even though Sinister doesn’t factor into the Days of Future Past comic book, Singer isn’t being precious with the material.  I think if we did see Mr. Sinister, it would be so far removed from what we’ve seen in the comics that it would render the character nearly unrecognizable.  He’s simply too outlandish to bring to the screen even if you did motion-capture. Perhaps, as Devin argues, Sinister could be a neat stepping stone to Apocalypse, but I have a different theory.

I think Dinklage will play Bolivar Trask, the creator of the Sentinels.  I believe the Sentinels will be the major foe because we can only see mutants fighting mutants so many times.  Furthermore, the sentinels lack personalities, so it’s up to a great actor like Dinklage to provide the emotional aspect of the threat.  It would also be a nice touch that if Trask was Dinklage’s size (he’s not in the comics), then he would devote his life to creating gigantic machines as a way to realize the physical strength and power he lacks.

Who do you think Dinklage will play?  Sound off in the comments.

well… this came from left field. I don’t have a clue who he could be

    • nimrod

I hope he’s playing some random mutant enslaver, someone who leads a pack of Hounds or a concentration camp guard because the original Days of Future Past didn’t really have a “main villain” the only real bad guy was Mystique being a short-sighted terrorist asshole.

But with this news I think I’ve finally lost interest in this thing. I mean you can only take so much, right? If it isn’t the news that “better director” Matthew Vaughn abruptly leaves the project then it’s the announcement that everyone who has ever starred in an X-Men film will star in this and that the main villain will be a made-up dwarf character.

Bryan Singer really is making the sequel to X-3 (literally and figuratively), isn’t he?

      • Um, Sure

Yeah, the guy who made the 2 best X-Men movies is going to screw up this one. Nerd logic.

  • rothgar

I’ve wanted Mr.Sinister for quite a while now, but I doubt it’ll be Dinklage who portrays him. I like the theory of him being the creator of the sentinels. Talk about compensation!

  • Patrick

    Master Mold!

  • CAB

Mr. Dinklage will play Modok for sure

    • Nerdgasm

I dont see how people can say it’s MODOK…sure he fought the XMEN alot but he’s more known as a Cap Villain and Avenger villain. Fox doesnt even have the rights to him and Disney/Marvel has cut off letting other people ahve control of other characters outside their respective franchises…in this case Xmen.

I LOVE the Stephen Trask idea. Make it so.

  • Lizard King

I’m going with Bastion. Dinklage can really bring the arrogant smugness that embodies Bastion.

    • Nate H

I don’t know if I see Dinklage playing a cold-blooded, killer robot. I could see him as the human Trask, though. Whoever he ends up being, it should be good (I’m glad it’s not Puck).

This movie’s either gonna bring Fox up to par with the competition, or it’ll be a Green Lantern-esque train wreck. Adding Tyrion Lannister can only help.

  • Carlos Shabo

    Mastermold. love the casting

  • Collin V.

People, the important thing is that we got the most badass dwarf in entertainment to play an X-Men villain. Oh God, this will be the best superhero movie EVER.

  • NCC-1701

I’m pretty sure Fox doesn’t own the rights to MODOK….right?

  • GunsOfNavarone

This could end up being on par with The Avengers, if done right. It’s certainly sounding very hopeful.

Love Peter Dinklage so this is welcome news.

I think Dinklage would kill as Fitzroy! A time traveling mutant with green hair in cahoots with Master Mold.

  • Pubes

I think Dinklage will play Wolverine as a kid. Maybe a 8-9 year old Logan

Ha! your username explains your childish thinking.Or is it the other way around?

      • Mike

        That was a joke

  • Deken

I would always want to see En Sabah Nur / Apocalypse should be there as main villain join with sentinel !!!!!! what about Famke Janssen ?? she must rise as white Phoenix, Charlize Theron would be good as Emma Frost, Halle Berry must be there as Storm X-men leader, Angelina Jolie as Scarlet Witch, Kelly Hu as Lady Deathstrike and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique

Dinklage will likely be playing Ahab. There will likely be some reference to apoc but not full out as that leaves him and sinister still available for future projects.

It could be modok, i always thought that was the perfect role for dinklage
