A quick Google search shows that there is a ton of Doctor Who/Lord of the Rings crossover fan fiction, as you might expect from two of the most devout fanbases on the planet. This news goes out to the large intersection of that Venn diagram. Doctor Who star Matt Smith mentioned to the Waikato Times [via AICN] how much he’d like to shoot an episode in New Zealand, especially if Rings director Peter Jackson were involved. The Times got Jackson on the phone, and the Kiwi filmmaker was happy to entertain the idea:
“I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, and I think Matt’s fantastic. Just name a time and place, and I’ll be there!”
Will it ever happen? Probably not! But the door is open. Steven Moffat and Co. have to at least ask now, right? Imagine the possibilities (preferably in the comments).
And what about the Silmarillion Peter ?
The Tolkien estate won’t let them touch Silmarillion.
They aren’t that fond of the movies.
With one of Steven Moffat stories and Peter Jackson directing… it should be the best episode in the whole history of Doctor Who!!!!

Actually, the possibility is better than one would think. Jackson produced the Tin-Tin movie that Moffat either wrote or co-wrote, so they have worked together previously.
This, however unlikely, would be fantastic.
actually I’m surprised this hasn’t come up before because Jackson has mentioned his love of the show since he was a child.I think he would jump at the chance if time permitted it and I’m happy to put money on it that it well. It’s hardly unusual for big name directors to dabble in Television
