Aaron Eckhart, AnnaSophia Robb, and Sean Bean Join Ben Hibon’s Dark PETER PAN Re-Imagining

There are various Peter Pan re-imaginings scooting their way through development.  There’s the terrible-sounding prequel Pan that stars Channing Tatum and sets Peter and Captain Hook as brothers.  Disney is considering the a promising adaptation of Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson’s Peter and the Starcatchers, which has Peter and the Lost Boys as the pirates.  And then there’s my favorite among the adaptations—an action-thriller, also titled Pan, directed by Ben Hibon.  If you’re not familiar with Hibon, he directed the beautiful animated sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1Pan was originally set up as a directing vehicle for Guillermo del Toro, but Hibon came on board to helm the picture last November.  The story is a dark re-imagining of J.M. Barrie’s tale which has Captain Hook as a haunted former police detective in pursuit of a childlike kidnapper.

Now the first cast members have been revealed and it’s an exciting line-up: Aaron Eckhart, Sean Bean, and AnnaSophia Robb.  Hit the jump for more details on their characters.

According to ScreenDaily, Eckhart has been cast as the tormented detective Hook, while Robb will play Wendy, “the lone survivor who leaves an asylum to help in the hunt.”  As for Bean, he’ll play Smee, “the chief detective and Hook’s only ally on the force.”  What interests me about this project is not only changing the setting and the characters, but how Hibon will balance the references to Peter Pan without having them overwhelm the story.  The other danger is simply telling your standard haunted cop drama and only the names have been changed.  Hopefully, Hibon will be able to pull off the balance.

Filming on Pan (expect a title change) is set to begin this October in Eastern Europe.

Only good things can happen with Sean Bean in a movie or television series. I hope he does more American mainstream films from now on, tries to reach his full potential as an actor and tries to win an Oscar. He is an underrated actor and should have joined the A-list years ago.

I agree, Urszula, but the problem is that Bean doesn’t WANT to actually be on the A-list. He’s not a Hollywood luvvie and doesn’t particularly like the way Hollywood operates. He does the big money films now and then in order to be able to afford to do the little critically-acclaimed indies and voice work that he loves.

Is Sean plays Smee, I guess that means Smee dies…

Interesting take on the whole Peter Pan story. & casting seems great so far! I think Eckhart will def be an interesting Hook! Is this idea an original work or is it based of a book or something?

Child-like kidnapper? Made me think of Brom’s The Child Thief.

  • Alex–

This sounds great, always thought Peter Pan was a rather perverted character. If he was a kid why is he sneaking into young girls houses?

I seriously cant believe that not one hollywood studio is trying to Make Brom’s The Child Thief into a movie. If they want a truly original take on the Peter Pan story they cant do any better than the Child Thief. The story is not that long and seems seems tailor made for a movie.

MY PERFECT PP: There needs to be a dark Peter Pan version, and by that I don’t mean something staring Jaden Smith. Ideally it would have a cryptic time period feel that takes on the high seas and provides the audience with the rich images only directors Juan Antonio Bayona and Guillermo del Toro can deliver. Death ,limbo, and fantasy would be the main underlying themes sprinkled with a haunting innocence and rich fable like storytelling that Sir James Matthew Barrie might enjoy. Throw in beautiful unbelievable Kinuko Y. Craft like characters with believable dreams and fears that one could relate to with Cillan Murphy as Hook and a swashbuckling climax and you can have my $8.12! Get to it Hollywood:)
