Peter Segal (Get Smart) is reportedly in talks to direct Vin Diesel (The Fast and the Furious) in the action film, The Machine for MGM.  At the moment, Segal is currently attached to Warner Bros. pictures Grudge Match and the adaptation of the manga, Bleach, so this more than likely won’t be his next feature.  Segal is producing Bleach and may end up directing the picture, while he is attached to direct the Grudge Match, about a boxing rematch between aging fighters. Diesel, meanwhile, is currently in post-production on The Untitled Chronicles of Riddick Sequel, which we can expect to see sometime early next year.  Hit the jump for more information on his involvement in The Machine, as well as the picture’s plot synopsis.

Variety reports vin-diesel-the-machinethat Segal is in negotiations to helm The Machine, an original script by writers/producers Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, both of Reno 911.  Diesel would star as the titular Machine, a humanoid creation of the Pentagon meant to be the world’s ultimate weapon.  Twenty years after mysteriously abandoning the project, a child finds (and makes friends with) The Machine. So basically a combination of Diesel’s Iron Giant and xXx?  Or, since Segal is directing the Bleach adaptation, maybe a Trigun reference would be more accurate.

After the much-anticipated Riddick comes to theaters next year, Diesel will also be seen in two more franchise films.  He’ll next move into production on The Fast and the Furious 6, the follow-up to Justin Lin’s Fast Five, which will feature the return of not only Diesel and the director, but also Dwayne Johnson. After that, Diesel may return for a sequel to his 2002 film, xXx. Tentatively titled, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, the third film in the franchise (and only the second to feature Diesel) has the following logline:

Xander Cage is left for dead after an incident, though he secretly returns to action for a new, tough assignment with his handler Augustus Gibbons.

Whatever.  If it means more Diesel screen time, I’m all for it.
