It was announced on Monday that Peter Weller will join the cast of Star Trek 2, though his role was not specified.  At the time, Matt speculated we shouldn’t expect details any time soon thanks to director J.J. Abrams‘ patented secrecy.  And he was mostly right.  But we do have a small tidbit from Weller’s agent Todd Eisner, who informed EW, “Of course J.J. Abrams is very tight-lipped about his projects, but I do know that it’s a substantial role and that Peter is playing a C.E.O.”  Trekkies, I need your help: Is there a well-known businessman or corporation in the Star Trek mythology?  I actually like the theory proposed in the comments section at /Film that the agent meant “CO”—a commanding officer is a more natural fit in the military-based universe.  [Edit: Commenter Brian chimed with my new favorite theory, that CEO stands for "chief engineering officer."  Chief engineer is a common position in the Star Trek franchise.]

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho, and series newcomer Alice Eve also star.  Following Benicio Del Toro’s  departure from the project, Édgar Ramírez (Carlos) has emerged as the frontrunner to play the villain (quite possibly Khan).  Star Trek 2 opens in 3D on May 17, 2013.

  1. Peter Weller is an underrated actor and it’s good to see him finally in a mainstream movie again. However, I would have liked to see a new actor to the franchise unless Weller is playing a descendant of John Frederick Paxton which would probably mean the villains are Terra Prime, the extremist xenophobic terrorist organisation.

  2. Star Trek takes place in a future where on Earth there is no poverty, big corporations, currency, and separate governments. Either he is an alien CEO or the comments are right and he means CO

  3. His role will probably have something to do with reigning young captain Kirk in. It has been stated previously by Abrams that a big theme of this film could have to do with Kirk becoming a Captain too fast/too young and this film will deal with the implications that has on his personality and the crew.

Weller will probably be a Commanding Officer that will be brought in to break Kirk or put him through the ringer.

  4. Having a corporate CEO in the Star Trek universe sounds a tad counter-Roddenberry. There is no money in the 23rd century. Greed, racism, war, poverty… all abolished. Could he be a rogue human entrepreneur selling fake chunks of Vulcan on the black market? Sure.

Scotty should be the Chief Engineer on Enterprise. Maybe Weller is the chief on a different ship… maybe the one Khan takes over?

Now flipping off the nerd switch.

  5. I think Weller will be playing the CEO of a Eugenics company. By looking at the attempted casting of Benicio del Toro I think the main villain will also be Khan Noonien Singh. Part of this movie could be showing the famed ‘Eugenics Wars’ as mentioned in the Original series episode ‘Space Seed” and of course Star Trek II the Wrath of Khan.

  6. You alll need to think more militent and less corp. CEO Chef Engeneering Officer. their sorta like top designers with a military twist

  7. Although Peter Weller’s character in the “Enterprise” series was chief administrator of a lunar mining colony. Maybe the Moon is exempt from Federation law, or is designated by the Federation as a free economic zone where capitalism reigns free.

  8. Peter Weller will play the part of an elderly Capt gone mad killing aliens and his own crew , Pike and Kirk are sent to intervene fighting klingons and taking on the Prime Directive also the main title ,
