PIRATES OF CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES May Have Christoph Waltz in Mind for a Villain

     November 27, 2013

As of this writing, we know that Johnny Depp is set to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, written by Jeff Nathanson and directed by Kon-Tiki‘s Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, who are aiming for a 2016 release.  Everything else that follows can be filed squarely under “rumor”.  We’ve got a few new possible plot details for the fifth installment of the high-seas fanchise, along with a pair of actors who could be starring alongside Depp, plus a host of character descriptions.  It’ll be interesting to say the least if it all turns out to be true, but there’s a good chance it’s nothing but bilge.  Hit the jump for more.

django-unchained-christoph-waltzWe first reported on rumored plot details a couple of months ago.  Here’s what we had, with spoilers whited out for your protection (highlight to read):

  • Witchcraft and witches play a very central role to the story.
  • There’s a new female lead who will be a sparring partner for Jack Sparrow.  She is suspected of witchcraft but is actually a woman of science.
  • There is also a ghost in a lead role, a former member of the British military who is now sided with Captain Barbossa.
  • Two pretty young Brits from farming families play into a subplot, filling the Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley roles from the initial trilogy.
  • The film begins with “a rather awkward wedding” and the climax involves the myth of the Bermuda Triangle.

Some of the new plot rumors support those previously reported.  Here’s the new set from Mail Online (via Bleeding Cool):

  • Jack and his team are in search of The Trident, which Keith [Richards'] Teague holds valuable information to.
  • The villain this time is Captain Brand… [he] wants the Trident so he can get his revenge on Jack.
  • Brand believes Jack turned his brother Eric into a pirate, which led to his death.
  • Also in Dead Men Tell No Tales, Jack becomes enchanted by Barbosa’s daughter, Carina Smyth.
  • She’s a beautiful woman in her late 30s who is called a witch by some but is really an adept astronomer.

rebecca-hallThe first thing you’ll notice is that Mail Online is claiming an exclusive on Keith Richards’ return to the franchise.  That may very well be, but their source also said the picture was starting production in October; it’s now slated to begin filming early next year.  Of interest is the Captain Brand character, which has apparently piqued the interest of Christoph Waltz.  As for the role of Carina Smyth, BC reports that the studio is interested in Rebecca Hall, but there’s no further confirmation beyond that.  One final character note, previous reports mentioned a “naked witch” playing a role in the plot; that casting call has apparently been adjusted slightly to “exotic”, though it’s unclear if the “naked” part is up for negotiation.

Christoph Waltz and Rebecca Hall? Oh God,please, don’t make me watch another one of these movies.

    • Willy Billy

No one is forcing you to watch you idiotic troll. and Disney don’t need you to watch because they’ve got billions of fans of the franchise who will go and see it.

      • TotesMcGotes

Christoph Waltz and Rebecca Hall might. Also,I never said Disney would be hurting if they lost me,but hey,if you really feel that butthurt to use that incredible argument,go ahead, pal.

      • GrimReaper07

Are you defending the mess that the Pirates of the Caribbean movies has become?

      • The Flobbit

He is defending that, The Lone Ranger, Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

      • Yousefs Mom

Yousef, I told you to make nice with others. Please forgive Yousef, he have huge crush on dis Johnny Depp. I tell him to take shirtless posters off his walls but he no listen. He is strange boy. If you speak bad of dis Johnny he never leave you alone. Oh Yousef.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Movie Comes Back to Life…Again

    • Willy Billy

Dead movie? Yeah right and that’s obviously the reason the last one made a billion dollar and is one of the highest grossing movies of all the time.

      • The Flobbit

I knew you brown-nosing idiot were back when you said “billion dollar”, rather than it’s plural form. PS. Just because a movie makes money doesn’t make it good.

      • Willy Billy

Stupid much? I meant that if it was a dead franchise then how come the last sequel made all of that money? We are talking money and hollywood here and not quality movies you bloody idiot.

      • The Flobbit

Well the last two installments have shown it to be dead creatively, dead artistically, with dead humor, dead action, dead characters, zero originality, zero quality. Hollywood is dead on it’s feet; Pirates needs a Norwegian director to undo the damage.

Who the fuck cares whether it made money or not? Crap films make huge profits all the time a la Transformers, Twilight, etc. Sod off and remember the Johnny Depp who wasn’t critically panned (I miss him too), you ignorant, self-conceited, moronic imbecile.

      • HeSaidSheSaidReviewSite

The 4th one made a billion? That’s just sad.

      • Willy Billy

        Yeah to you.

      • ʝoe ßloggs

So billion dollar box office = good movie to you eh?
        Enjoy this next one then.

  • Leo Spaceman

All I care about is that they bring back Barbossa. It’s not Pirates without him and Mr. Gibbs

    • The Flobbit

I was more hoping for just Johnny, and a completely new cast of characters. A more focused, tightly plotted, character driven action movie with a touch of magic, sweeping cinematography, and of course, lots of action.

  • The Flobbit

Christoph Waltz is perfect for the role, and I love Rebecca Hall. I love the way this is going: competent directors, strong story, good cast. Let’s forget that shit (3-4) ever happened, shall we?

  • mattinacan

    god, please make it stop

    • Willy Billy

Who is forcing you to see it you exaggerating troll? The last one made a billion freaking dollar and they won’t stop just because a naysayer troll don’t like it.

      • mattinacan

i see I got to you, your weakness is a stinky cologne

Ah Christoph Waltz… You really have to get away from these villain roles for a while, man. Do things that better show your amazing range.

    • Gocho

Range? Appearnatly he can only play himself.

      • DanGerDiabolik

“Appearnatly” is the best spelling of that word i have ever seen. i shall use it henceforth.

I’m not a fan of this witchcraft idea. Wasn’t Tia Dalma technically a witchcraft girl? Tue girl who ended up being Calypso was doing witchcraft. If I had a chance to write it there’s several ways I would go but I don’t think I would go this way. But I don’t care ill be watching regardless I love these movies

I like Christoph Waltz (who doesn’t?) but the films he’s been in apart from the Tarantino films have been pretty meh.

    • Maya

I don’t like Christoph Waltz and yes he can’t do anything good without Tarantino.

      • lordjim

carnage?certainly not polanski´s best but the acting was flawless.looking forward to the zero theorem.

      • -

I think it’s just the material he’s been working with apart from the Tarantino films hasn’t been great. I find it hard to believe that he wouldn’t be great in a PTA or Coen Brothers film.

The Bermuda Triangle, yes! I always thought this was an interesting subject for an adventure film. Could work well for an Indiana Jones film too.

    • Jamesy

Agreed, always thought it would be great for an Indy film, would have much preferred that over the sh*t fest we got in 08.

It’s a pity they destroyed the magic of what made POTC so succesful. the last two were no more than a succession of “look at me I am Johnny depp playing Johnny Depp ad nauseam”.

the first one was such a delight. The second not bad at all. the third just a commercial sequel and the fourth a total garbage.

    • Willy Billy

How the hell is Johnny depp playing Johnny Depp if he wasn’t like that at all in the real life? The character has a different persona than his.

      • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

Johnny depp is playing the same damn character ad nauseam.

Jack Sparrow = Tonto = Mad Hatter.

        Just the costume that changes

      • Guy

        You forgot about Willy Wonka.

      • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

Anyway the remake of willy wonka was horrible. No soul at all.

    • The Flobbit

Black Pearl: fresh, funny, gloriously awesome. Classic, always great to revisit.

Dead Man’s Chest: great action scenes, sword-fighting, a bit complex with Davy Jones and all. One of cinema’s greatest sword-fights.

World’s End: Has exactly three good scenes: Kiera’s speech, the trio walking on the sandbank, and the triple Mexican standoff. The rest is overtly complex, goofy, poorly plotted, and actually rather dull…

Stranger Tides: Terrible plotting, no sense of joy, cliches, dark tone, Deux ex machinae, bad characters, suffers from the lack of Orlando and Kiera (whine about em all you like; they were the heart and soul of the film, narratively), the overglut of action. A mess, and an unenjoyable one.

@dave_trumbore:disqus – Actually, Pirates 5 is slated to begin filming in October 2014, not early next year.

  • Yurine

Hopefully it’s a better script than the last one.

    • Sean

@disqus_vRooi90zz1:disqus I have a good feeling it will be a better script then the last one, considering what the possible plot details are.

  • poppincherry

Looks like another film-by-the -numbers production. You can already write the script yourself.
That stupid ass franchise has turned into a complete fucking joke. Disney is just going to surround their guy Depp with a lot of thespian eye candy as Captain Jack goes about mumbling bullshit from scene to scene. I can see Depp and Waltz dueling it out in the 3rd act on a big ass plank above an abyss to the other side. Oh, sounds like a segway for yet another goddamn movie.
    Kiss my ass!

  • the truth

Looking forward to ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean 5′. The previous 4 are fun, and enjoyable movies, and well made and acted and the music in all of them is perfect. Something that jj the hack abrams knows nothing about.

    • jason

JJ abrams needs to shoot himself dead.

    • The Lie

Liking the crappy instalments of the Pirates franchise makes your opinions on all other movies worthless. Why even bring up Abrams? He has nothing do with this article. Do you have a hate crush on him or something?
