Pixar’s NEWT Cancelled

     May 11, 2010

It’s hard to imagine that Pixar’s sorcery couldn’t make any project thrive, but such is the case as today we’ve learned that they’ve canceled their upcoming film, NewtThe Pixar Blog reports that they learned from Walt Disney Company archivist Dave Smith (or a representative), that “the film has been canceled.”  This wasn’t totally out of left field.  Newt was originally slated to hit theaters next summer, but was moved back to 2012 to make room for Cars 2.  However, with both Brave (formerly The Bear and the Bow) and Monsters, Inc. 2 set for 2012, Newt mysteriously disappeared from the schedule.  And then in February, Disney legend and animation industry insider Floyd Newman said point blank, “Newt is dead.”  Looks like he was right.  Sadly, Cars 2 lives even though I think the largest success of the first film was in the ability to sell disgusting loads of merchandise.  Newt sounded far more interesting.

Hit the jump to see what Newt was about as well as concept art from the film.

Here was the plot synopsis offered for Newt from back in 2008:

What happens when the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet are forced together by science to save the species, and they can’t stand each other? That’s the problem facing Newt and Brooke, heroes of “newt,” the Pixar film by seven-time Academy Award(R) winner for sound Gary Rydstrom, and director of Pixar’s Oscar-nominated short, “Lifted.” Newt and Brooke embark on a perilous, unpredictable adventure and discover that finding a mate never goes as planned, even when you only have one choice. Love, it turns out, is not a science.

That sounded so awesome! Lifted is my favorite Pixar short, so this could have only been good. :(

Oh, and I'm sure you're right about Cars' success being mostly due to a shipload of merchandise. My kids even have some of those cars, and they don't have anything from any other Pixar movie, including Toy Story, which they like better as a movie.

Yeah Cars was a poor film by Pixar's standards but surely the merchandise is a good thing for the studio? It gives them the opportunity to make a better film the next time and helps fund other projects, sothe thought of “disgusting amounts of merchandise” being sold with a studio like Pixar behind it can only help increase quality for other projects. I don't think Pixar would ever be happy with a sub-standard film and are honest enough to admit that.

    Fuck! Disney is killing Pixar.
I do not want Pixar to turn into some sequel-crazy mini-Disney. Fuck Disney!

  • whatever

The obvious think to say is “Disney is killing Pixar”. I kind of doubt it – I imagine Disney let's Pixar do pretty much whatever they want and will take as much product as Pixar can turn out. Disney has no interest in killing the goose. Cars was a easily the worst Pixar movie in my mind and the merchandising was revolting. It seemed like years before I stopped seeing those stupid doe eyed toys everywhere I looked. I'd really like to see Pixar create a smaller label for cooler, perhaps even more mature projects to balance out the sugary junk like cars.

Ever since I heard of NEWT I was all for it!

This is a shame. Maybe it was dropped because the whole focus of the storyline is to get two lizards fucking. And while the US market may be ready for a world destroyed by ignorance (WALL-E) and an old guy coping with death (UP) sex is still an odd topic where most parents suddenly freeze up and even the most open minded of them can suddenly become nagging venom spitters.

Shame. I hope Pixar doesn't start to lose their way. Aside from CARS I've loved all work and most of all I've loved their originality. I can't avoid saying that seeing Pixar release three sequels in the next few years (Toy Story 3, Cars 2, Monsters Inc 2) isn't a welcome sight.

you all were looking forward to watching pixar make an animated film about lizards that need to have sex? wow. This sounds as crappy as Alpha and omega. Same concept.

this sounds as crappy as Alpha and Omega.

Awww come on! I was kinda excited for Cars 2 and MI 2 but cancelling Newt?! I was so looking forward to this movie! More than that wierd fairytale pixars making called “brave”. It sounds cliche and stupid about a princess. Comon newt sounded more exciting and adventure like! NEWT FTW!!!!

This movie sounds like it would be good. On Newt wiki I saw some really good art pics for the movie it sounds adventurous. I hope they didn’t really cancel it but instead just move it out of the way for a while.

  • reba

Sounds a lot like the movie RIO ….about the last 2 species of a blue bird…they can’t stand each other at first either but then fall in love. hmm

  • Kate

I hope they just moved Newt for a different date. It sounds waaay too good to just trash like that. I was looking forward to a movie with pretty grass and trees like A bugs life. Judging by the art concept it almost looks like that, but better. Sad, hope pixar starts making it in 2013 or something.

  • anonymous

cool story, but the synopsis sounded like the movie RIO. Just replace the blue Macaws with blue footed newts.

  • leo

um its sounds like a Newt version of Rio…

  • Z Mullen

it was obviously because of “Rio”. sounds very similar in storyline but on top of that Brazil is very “now”, what with the World Cup and the Olymics…. the MONEY.

ah i see somebody basically said that already!!
