Can Hulk Survive in Space? Mark Ruffalo Weighs In

If you’re hoping to see a Hulk solo film, don’t count on it any time soon. But if another standalone Hulk film comes together, there’s been speculation/wishful thinking that it would adapt the comics Planet Hulk and World War Hulk. Planet Hulk has the character being shot into space because a group of superheroes decide he’s too dangerous to be on Earth, and World War Hulk is his revenge.

Although the question of Hulk going into space never comes up in Avengers: Age of Ultron (so this is not a spoiler about the character’s future in the movies), Steve still asked Mark Ruffalo about what would happen if “the other guy” went into the vacuum of space:

Because this is a quick back-and-forth between Ruffalo and Steve, and I’ve provided the transcript:

MARK RUFFALO: That’s an interesting idea. Well, when they launch him into space in the comics, and we get into “Planet Hulk”, he has that kind of freak out in the vessel that he’s in, and he does sort of break it open, doesn’t he? Isn’t he plummeting?

But the comic rules and the movie rules can be different.

RUFFALO: And they are. Clearly.

That’s why I’m wondering, and I know this is a nerdy question—

RUFFALO: It’s a total nerdy question!

But it’s legit!

RUFFALO: Totally.

Because there’s a lot of science involved, but the thing about the Marvel movies is they ask you to make a leap, but they don’t ask you to leap too far.

RUFFALO: And will he die? Will he actually suffocate or does he just go into some kind of a coma? I don’t know. That’s an interesting question.

My personal belief with the Hulk is that he can’t be killed because anything that harms him just makes him stronger. And since trying to kill Banner just releases the Hulk, he doesn’t have any physical weaknesses. His greatest weakness is decreased intelligence and a greatly reduced lack of self-control. When it comes to outside forces, even the cold, unforgiving darkness of space, he’s unstoppable.
