Platinum Dunes will remake the 1987 cult classic The Monster Squad and they’re attempting to tap action director Rob Cohen, (xXx, The Fast and the Furious, Stealth) to direct. Cohen was one of the producers on the original film and Platinum Dunes is the company behind all the recent ’80s horror remakes like Friday the 13th and the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street.
For those who don’t know The Monster Squad, go rent it right now. Directed by Fred Dekkar (Night of the Creeps) and co-written by Dekkar and Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon) it’s about a group of kids who take matters into their own hands to save the world from Dracula, The Wolfman, The Mummy and The Gillman. Frankenstein gets an assist and the audience gets a whole dose of cheesy effects, awesome ’80s montages, memorable characters and classic quotes like “Wolfman’s Got Nards.”
In addition to directing, Deadline reports that Cohen would produce along with Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. Writers have yet to be signed. After the jump, read what Cohen himself had to say about this remake when it was first floated in 2008.
In 2008, Rob Cohen did an interview where he was asked what a remake of The Monster Squad would entail. The full four minute answer is available here, but this is a taste:
“It’s just one of those beautiful opportunities for a remake because it’s not like the first film was bad, but what was really bad was the marketing. So you’ve got a core fan group and a great property. A great story waiting to be rediscovered.”
Cohen is right about one thing. Though the film has a hardcore group of fans, many people still have no idea it exists. It wasn’t even released on DVD until 20 years after its release, thanks in large part to a series of sold out shows in Austin, Texas.
As a huge Monster Squad fan (this is currently on my wall) I’m totally opposed to a remake. Sure, it’s a timeless concept that could use with some updated special effects and scares, but the charm of the original film is its raw simplicity and subtle sexual humor. While Cohen was obviously involved with the film for a long time, it would be a shame to see him screw up our memory of the fantastic 1987 classic.

I think Hollywood has been a remake of so much shit since a beginning of time that why a fuck are you bitching so much? Is it because you are a little bitch? I dont think so because I love your websites so much so this is not true. But I no you love Monster Squads so much and a original will always be there but let a new generation have it and be happy for them.
One thing not to be happy for is a shit remake of Alice in a Pile of Shit 3-D that you can read a review for here

Back in the day, and I never lived in that day, but back in the day they had re-rerelaes and double features, that how Wizard of Oz went from flop to classic. So here is a idea, instead of remaking things, re-release them, imagine hoe much a Batman Begins/ Dark Knight double feature would make before the release of the third one.
I just showed this to a group of elementary school students and by the end they were jumping up and down cheering for their favorite monster, they will not recapture that in the remake.
If you're such a fan, with posters on your wall and whatnot, the least you could've done was spell Fred Dekker's name correctly. Good grief.
My thoughts exactly. THey should re-release these movies. I grew up with this movie aswell as other like the Karate KID. Now, I show my nephew these movies and he loves them. My nephew now thinks that the KArated Kid remake is a stupid idea.
I love this movie. I knew the remake would come sooner or later. I think a remake would be kinda cool. But if Rob Cohen directs it this thing will suck big time. I thought Dunes was only hiring young music vid directors. I don't care if Cohen was an origina producer. HE SUCKS!
From the look of the script, it makes more sense to have Shane Black direct this thing.

Come to think of it, I actually like that idea a LOT.
