Last month, we reported that shooting on Gil Kenan‘s remake of Poltergeist was set to begin in Toronto this September.  Today, MGM and Fox 2000 have sent out a press release announcing that they’ll co-finance the picture, and it will indeed shoot this fall.  Per the press release, “In a revisionist take on the classic horror film, a family struggling to make ends meet relocates to an outdated suburban home and is confronted by an angry spirit who kidnaps their youngest daughter and challenges them to band together to rescue her from the clutches of evil.”  David Lindsay-Abaire (Oz the Great and Powerful) wrote the script.

Hit the jump for the press release.  With a fall start date, Poltergeist will probably arrive in theaters sometime in 2014.

I liked the Evil Dead reboot, so I’m not going to automatically slam this one. The first poltergeist is outstanding, but if they can do it justice then I’m all for seeing the remake.

Exactly, the original Poltergeist is still an exceptional movie,…even some 30+ yrs later! I think it’s gonna be very tough to top it!
Although I also quite enjoyed the Evil Dead reboot/remake,…it just didn’t have that creepy atmosphere of the original ED for me.

I loved the Evil Dead reboot, so with Raimi behind this one as well it should be just as good. Hope it isn’t too gory though, it doesn’t need to be.

  • AHHHHH

Even if they remake this shot for shot, I will still scream out of the theater when I see that clown doll in the bedroom.

Those actors replacing JoBeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson, is going to mess that move up big time. Why not use them, and bring in a new set of child actors to replace Heather O’Rourke and her sister and brother “Dana and Robbie.”
