Not only did the first trailer for the upcoming Poltergeist remake just hit Apple Trailers, but an international version surfaced on Digital Spy too, and it’s better. Much better, in fact. There’s nothing particularly wrong with the domestic version and it’s quite fun to watch, but the international edition does a much better job establishing the key characters and making them feel like a real family, and that winds up making the insanely freaky things that happen to them exponentially more horrifying. On top of that, it offers up a far clearer sense of what Jared Harris’ character is all about.
In the remake, a young girl (Kennedi Clements) is abducted by evil forces that haunt her new home, but rather than calling on an old school spiritual medium like Tangina for help, her parents turn to Jared Harris’ character. There’s no mention of the whole Haunted House Cleaners thing, but it is pretty clear that Harris is playing a guy with a significantly more advanced ghost hunting operation. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, this trailer actually states what makes the new Poltergeist different; it isn’t a classic haunting and the characters are dealing with a new, more powerful poltergeist. No, it’s not the most mind-blowing revelation, but is does suggest director Gil Kenan and his team are taking the scenario a step further and when you’re remaking a classic, that’s a vital thing to convey to your audience.

Here’s the official synopsis for Poltergeist:
Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (“Spiderman,” “Evil Dead”, “The Grudge”) and director Gil Kenan (“Monster House”) contemporize the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces.
