This weekend, Lionsgate and Saban unveiled the very first teaser trailer for the brand new Power Rangers movie, which reboots the franchise as a major motion picture. This redo has been in the works for years, and the studios enlisted Earth to Echo filmmaker Dean Israelite to bring the story to life. Not everyone was pleased with the Chronicle-esque teaser, which attempts to bridge the gap between gritty and teen-friendly, but this is a major property that has legions of fans, so interest in the film remains extremely high.
Fresh off that trailer debut, Lionsgate and Saban have unveiled some new images from the film—a few of which make those Chronicle comparisons hard to ignore. Interestingly, while this film is indeed a reboot of the long-running TV franchise, the core cast maintains the character names of the original Power Rangers, who themselves starred in two feature film adaptations in the 90s. So while Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, and Zack are the main characters of this movie, I’ll be interested to see if this redo acknowledges the many iterations of Power Rangers that have come before, or if it’s a hard reboot. In the teaser trailer, Elizabeth Banks’ villainous Rita Repulsa makes reference to having killed Rangers before, so could we possibly be dealing with alternate realities of some sort?
Those are questions for another day, but if you want to know a bit more about the Power Rangers reboot, you’ll want to check out our recap of the film’s New York Comic-Con panel from this weekend. Take a look at the new images below, and click for high-resolution. Power Rangers also stars Naomi Scott, Becky G., Ludi Lin, RJ Cyler, Dacre Montgomery, Bill Hader, and Bryan Cranston. The film opens in theaters on March 24, 2017.
