If you’re wondering what a gritty, serious-looking Power Rangers might look like, then the first Power Rangers trailer has the answer. The film will have its New York Comic-Con presentation later today, but the trailer has already found its way online.

For those who are unfamiliar with Power Rangers, it centers on a group of five teenagers who are gifted with superpowers when they come into contact with an alien material.

Director Dean Israelite appears to have made a film that looks very much in line with his previous feature, Project Almanac. It’s a group of teenagers, who are clearly outsiders, who come into contact with something extraordinary that both enriches and endangers their lives. Given the superhero-angle, that makes Power Rangers also resemble Josh Trank’s Chronicle minus the found-footage approach. But there’s still the drained color palette, the snarky humor, and the surprising seriousness.

Will that approach work for Power Rangers? The show (or at least some of the show’s many iterations) has always been brightly colored and a little campy. After all, these are heroes who can summon “Zords”, giant vehicles that can form to create an even bigger vehicle (I’m not sure how Power Rangers wasn’t sued into oblivion by the makers of Voltron). But Lionsgate seems fairly confident in their approach, and I’ll be curious to see how it plays with the crowd at today’s NYCC.

Check out the Power Rangers trailer below. The film opens March 24, 2017 stars Ludi Lin as Black Ranger/Zack, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger/Kimberly, RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger/Billy, Becky G as Yellow Ranger/Trini, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger/Jason, Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, Bill Hader as Alpha 5, and Bryan Cranston as Zordon.

Here’s the official synopsis for Power Rangers:

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
