AMC has released the opening 4 minutes and change of the new series Preacher, and it is made abundantly clear that this show is not messing around. Seriously, this thing is strange, crazy, and gory from the get-go, and kudos to creators/writers/directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for kicking this thing off with a bang. It also helps that the series looks incredible thanks to the addition of cinematographer Bill Pope (The Matrix, The World’s End), as this is shaping up to be one of AMC’s most visually arresting shows yet.

The series is based on the comic of the same name by Garth Ennis and follows Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), a West Texas preacher who receives the power to speak with the voice of God and becomes enmeshed in a whirlwind drama with his ex-girlfriend/assassin Tulip (Ruth Negga) and a vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun).

In her review of the first few episodes, Allison praised the show’s blend of style with substance and hailed it as a “violent, bombastic search for faith and transformation.” It’s clear in these opening scenes that Rogen and Goldberg are going full-out with this thing, and the addition of Breaking Bad veteran Sam Catlin to the team as the series’ showrunner bolds well for its future.

So check out the opening scene of the Preacher pilot below and let us know what you think—but please, if you’ve read the comics, don’t post spoilers. Be sure to check back on Collider once the show kicks up for our weekly recaps from Evan Valentine. The series premieres on AMC on May 22nd.
