New Trailer for PRIEST Starring Paul Bettany

by     Posted 3 years, 232 days ago

Someone please put Paul Bettany in better movies.  The new trailer for Priest has gone online and I have little faith in this movie.  While I like the idea of a futuristic vampire western, this film, which re-teams Bettany with his Legion director Scott Charles Stewart, appears to go overboard on crappy CGI and po-faced self-importance.  Someone please explain to me why a film where a guy throws a bunch of crucifix shurikens is trying to be deadly serious.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, which features some unintentional laughs but very little joy.  Priest also stars Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, and Lily Collins.  It opens in 3D on May 13th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Priest:

Set for release in spring 2011, this Screen Gems thriller is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi ride, set in an alternate world – one ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. The story revolves around a legendary Warrior Priest from the last Vampire War who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on a quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece’s boyfriend, a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.  Directed by Scott Charles Stewart and written by Cory Goodman along with Min-Woo Hyung from the graphic novel series “Priest”, PRIEST stars Paul Bettany, Karl Urban, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Lily Collins, Brad Dourif, Stephen Moyer, and Christopher Plummer.

Doesn’t look completely awful. At least they cast competent actors.

On one hand I want to think that a movie about vampires set in a western/neolithic backdrop is going to be crap but for some reason I think this actually looks like a decent popcorn flick, not an award winner, but Bettany rocks and the story/action/villain all look cohesive/cool enough to want to catch it.

I disagree with the writer. This movie doesn’t look bad, sure it isn’t going to be a completely competent and AMAZING film but it looks like Daybreakers but on a more epic scale, which in my opinion was a very entertaining B-movie that is well worth watching.

THE CG is actually pretty good to, it looks a lot better than say 2012 which looked extremely plastic and fake. The actors in the movie are all very good actors. With any luck this movie will turn out to be an actually good action/adventure film, but at least I believe it will end up exceeding most peoples expectation.

But I agree that Paul Bettany deserves to be an A-list actor and be nominated for Oscars, etc, etc. He is just a wonderful actor and charismatic guy who deserves to be recognized. We can only HOPE that this movie doesn’t tarnish his career. I’ll wait till the film comes out to make any final judgments though.

Looks better than average for this type of film. Much better looking that the first teasers let on. I agree about Paul Bettany, though. He was the best part of A Beautiful Mind.

Comparisons to Daybreakers are superficial, as that was firmly rooted in a alternate reality of corporatism and a vampire infection.

Priest, seems to be offering a future post apocalyptic world run by a theocracy who used priests as a special forces soldier of sorts.

Which is the main basis of it’s appeal for me at least.

And the actors are very solid for an action film, no doubt.

Is it just me or does this film look like it borrowed some elements from the anime Trinity Blood?

Oh My! Can someone please book me down for advance seats!!!!!

I love this, cant for the life of me see the ‘crappy’ cgi effects from the above article. If the final product is anything like this traile am sure they got a sure winner omn their hands.

    Critics…. who needs them

  • OMG

    Damn, They’ve done it again!!!
Completely ruined a wonderful graphic novel by making this dumbass looking sci-fi & horror half breed whatever this is.
You gotta check out the original graphic novel, it’s epic!
