At today’s “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” junket I was able to participate in a mini press conference with super Producer Jerry Bruckheimer. If you don’t know his name, you definitely know his movies – “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Bad Boys,” “Top Gun,” “The Rock,” “Con Air,” just to name a few. The man has not only survived in Hollywood for decades, he’s bigger than ever.

With the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise seemingly finished, he’s started to look at new properties to bring to the big screen. And the next one that seems to be getting the greenlight is “Prince of Persia.”

The movie is going to be based on the very successful video game series, and with Hollywood struggling how to make a good movie based on a video game property… my first question was about that very subject.

And for those wondering when the film might be getting made, Jerry revealed that he wants to start filming in June. Obviously with the writers still on strike that date could change…. but this is the first time I’d heard a start date.

In the coming days I’ll have a full transcript, but if you want to listen to the audio of the entire interview right now, you can do so by clicking here.

Question: Many video game fans have been frustrated by Hollywood’s inability to deliver the goods… and you’re going to be making Prince of Persia. What can you tell fans of that series what they can look forward to?

Jerry Bruckheimer: We hired a very interesting director – Mike Newell – who did one of the Harry Potter’s and also did Donnie Brasco and he’s a very inventive, ingenious director and I think he’s going to bring something really special to it. We’re just starting to… we have a screenplay, we’re just starting to develop the look of it. It’ll be unique and fresh.

Q: Is this one of these properties that you envision the possibility of a franchise out of and is this going to be a really big film the way a National Treasure is?

Jerry Bruckheimer: Yes. It’s a big production and if they work it’s another character that you can take on other adventures.

Q: Do you have any casting on it?

Jerry Bruckheimer: Not yet.

Q: Can you do for video games what you did for theme park rides?

Jerry Bruckheimer: I don’t know. We’ll see.

Q: Is that script set in stone now because of the…

Jerry Bruckheimer: Well we’re not going to film until June so hopefully the writers will come to some kind of consensus with the studios and we can continue.

Q: And could you talk about how you got involved with Prince of Persia?

Jerry Bruckheimer: It’s a game that was brought to us early on and I thought it was very exciting and thought it was an interesting…first of all it’s an interesting period and it’s something that other people weren’t doing. So I always like to go into new arenas that other filmmakers aren’t in.

Q: Do you envision any challenges of trying to film in the mid ages? Is it the mid ages?

Jerry Bruckheimer: I guess it’s the 8th or 9th Century, but that could change to. It might change a little bit, we’re not sure yet. It’ll definitely be a period film; we’re not going to make it contemporary.
