Today, the Producers Guild of America announced their ten nominees for the Best Picture of the Year. The PGA tends to line up with the Academy as far as nominees go so it’s interesting to see three sci-fi flicks on the list: Avatar, District 9, and Star Trek. As Avatar continues to amass more cash, it looks like an Oscar contender. District 9 still has an outside shot but it looks like its chances are starting to fade. Star Trek is a complete dark horse in this race but a Best Picture Oscar nomination would be kind of awesome. It should be noted that the PGA did break with the Academy last year by choosing The Dark Knight as one of their five Best Picture nominees while the Academy replaced that choice with The Reader. The question is if the Academy will be more open to genre films, especially since the five-to-ten increase was meant to create greater diversity among nominees. More after the jump:
But with ten films now open to competition, the PGA may not keep its usual 80% success ratio. That’s not to say it’s going to be totally wrong, but we may be looking at a 60-70% correct prediction rate this time out. It’s also interesting to note what’s missing: A Serious Man and Where the Wild Things Are. WTWTA was already an outside shot but I think this is the nail in the coffin of any hope for a an Oscar nomination for Best picture.

Avatar has, sadly enough, been a sure bet for a Best Picture nomination pretty much since its release, but oh man do I hope Star Trek (the most clumsily-directed film of the year) and District 9 (a movie that promised to be so much more than it was) don't carry over. Or Invictus for that matter…hell, they're really only 50-50 as far as truly deserving movies go. An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Up, and Up in the Air…all fine films. The rest of them can sink.
It is kinda interesting that, pound for pound, the Animated category trumps the regular Best Picture list by a good margin. Two truly great films (Fox and Coraline), two very fine films (Princess and Up), and only one alleged stinker (9, which I didn't see but roundly heard was pretty much a drag).
