Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS Set for IMAX 3D Release

Everything about Prometheus (Ridley Scott’s sort-of, but not really prequel to Alien) was already fairly epic—that cast, that trailer, that synopsis boasting of travelers journeying to the edge of the space to find the meaning of life (I feel dwarfed by the incomprehensible vastness of the universe just thinking about it). Well, imagine all that, but twice as big, because Deadline reports that, in addition to puny, regular-sized screens, Prometheus will also be running in IMAX 3D when it’s released on June 8.

Alien, my favorite Scott film, is an utterly masterful marriage of sci-fi and gothic horror. My hopes for Prometheus aren’t quite so lofty. But I’m definitely shelling out the extra dough for an IMAX ticket when the time comes. Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Patrick Wilson and Charlize Theron.

  1. would the Red Epic 5k resolution look “not blown up” on IMAX. damn, all these great films keeps getting IMAX release(Bond got his last week). i sure half of those will look bad on IMAX when it’s stretch(kind of like Bond). if you have anydetails on why Prometheus on IMAX will be better, tell me.

the best imax movies are still TDK, AVATAR, INCEPTION, MI:GP.

    • It really depends on if 5k is considered that much higher resolution than 35mm as it would still need a load of DMR upscaling done to it to fill the screen.

70mm imax itself is theoretically 16k so 5k is pretty far off that.

Avatar and Inception didnt a single frame of full imax though avatar was cropped differently for the screen (although im pretty sure it wasnt rendered any higher res) and inception had shots film in vistavision and 65mm anamorphic (widescreen and no where near the size of 15perf 70mm imax).

I would only ever go see a proper true imax film like TDK, mission impossible, transformers 2, TDKR in imax (tron legacy was reframed and rerendered for the full screen.

Im just going to see promethus on a standard digital cinema rather than imax i reckon.

  2. I guess the RED EPIC 3D is going to look tremendous on IMAX digital, which we only have three of in the Netherlands… Only England has the real ones -,-
