First Trailer for Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS

by     Posted 1 year, 178 days ago

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Prometheus, a sci-fi project from director Ridley Scott with ties to the Alien series.  Here’s the logline: “The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.”  This is very much a teaser, as it focuses much more on mood than showcasing whole scenes. We don’t even really get a good look at any of the stars, but that’s inconsequential because the trailer does a damn fine job of sending chills down your spine regardless. If there was any doubt about the film’s connection to Alien, that’ll be put to rest after watching this trailer (the title appearance is fantastic). This marks a return not only to the sci-fi genre for Scott, but to horror, and I couldn’t be happier.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, and also Guy Pearce star. Prometheus is scheduled for release on June 8, 2012.

Click over to Apple to watch the trailer in HD.

For comparison, here’s the original 1979 trailer for Scott’s Alien:

Official synopsis:

Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.

The only bad thing about this is that we have to wait six months to see it

    • Jaye

You are so absolutely right! What a good trailer. I will not be seeing another one if they release one until my midnight show for Prometheus. I am excited!

  • felliniboy

the TITLE CARD nod to ALIEN was sweet. Hopefully this will be a knock-out film.

i first saw ALIEN about two years ago(i’m just 20). and though i admire it for how it played with tension and how important it might have been at the time it was released, it’s just dated now. I hate to be the guy who criticizes the effects of that time(i’m not!), but the Alien there isn’t really scary. The limitations of the effects at that time was understandable(and i wouldn’t want to change it like George Lucas). but still, when everyone on board the ship was scared, i wasn’t.

hopefully, with effects that we have now. and the greatness of Scott’s filmmaking on the original Alien, he can give the new generation what Alien might have meant to the 1979 fans.

    • Jaye

I understand your point, being a number of years older, I find the Alien to be one of the most distinguishable creatures ever on screen. I personally love the mood and feeling of the first movie over the 2nd. The 2nd is still an amazing feel, just a different genre, Horror/Thriller over Action/Thriller.

      • Christopher S

Umm…that wasn’t the point of what he was saying. He’s saying because he wasn’t in that era that he feels the movie is dated, I feel the same way, being 23 myself. Whenever you go back and watch something from your youth you always find it quite amusing the way you felt about it back then, but being more mature you see the flaws. Same thing here, the xenemorph is a iconic creature, however the effects of it in the first Alien belittle what it could be in the modern effect era.

    • Jim

Seeing it theatrically can make a huuuge difference. I was lucky to see a 70mm print of Alien two years ago in England. Made for a completely different experience.

    • Roberto Da Costa

Of course you would feel that way about Alien. I’m 26 and saw Aliens before seeing the first one just this year. But your point is so obvious – it doesn’t even need stating. Especially when it sounds like its only being made to slight a movie you wouldn’t even be in the position to make that comment about if it hadn’t set the bar in the first place. It’s like saying the first Mac – for all it’s importance and innovations at the time – looks dated in 2011. Of course it looks dated (lol) – it’s a sign that the world has effectively built on its past innovations.

And yes, I have an issue with people that think prefacing a slight with seemingly objective disclaimers like “I know that..” will make the actual slight ok. Nah son, that’s what politicians do.

      • felliniboy

What can i do ROBERT? Fake my assumptions on ALIEN? oh the alien was scary! oh that made me s*** my pants!

come on. lighten up. i’m just saying that with the kind of technology that we have, Practical effects and CG effects, Scott can deliver an ALIEN movie for our generation. Jeez man. I wasn’t bashing ALIEN. you saw the part where i said the effects are dated, but you missed the part where i said that i’m hopeful the film will deliver(which is THE message of my comment).

can’t i voice my opinion Dad?!

    • Bill Graham

Personally, I think everything you said about the effects are wrong. I’m 25. I saw the movie 10-15 years ago for the first time, but regardless, it is a highlight in the horror genre. Same with THE THING and JAWS. Know what they have in common? NO COMPUTER EFFECTS. None.

The fact that the xenomorph is a human inside a suit doesn’t matter; it’s creepy as hell and fully interacts with the environment and the actors. To this day, that thing gives me chills. The intensity of the original is off the charts, even for a film as old as it is. There is very little that we have today that can improve on the effects of the first two ALIEN films.

Part of that is because they are practical effects. And I bet a lot of Ridley’s effects in this film will be practical as well. Of course, it appears a lot of the environments and set pieces will be CG, but I have a strong feeling the man “creature” will be practical.

      • felliniboy

you misunderstand me. i wasn’t referring CG effects when i said “effects”. Special Effects can be practical effects as well, and would be much scarier. But the Alien was a man in a suite who can barely walk. ALIEN had great filmmaking though. Scott knows how to build tension.

    • Django3000

In the Alien / Aliens discussion I always find it interesting that people say it isn’t scary. There was an article by David Eggers (of “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius” and “Where the Wild Things Are- screenplay” fame) pointing out the the film “The Exorcist , done around the same time as Alien, is not nearly as scary today as it was then, because the fundamental assumptions it was based on have changed in common parlance. In Exorcist, people’s in the Church was less flawed then, not to mention the most “frightening” aspects, like single-frame, subliminal shots of demons, had more of an effect in the overall media climate of the time.

With Alien, sci-fi had become completely campy as imitators of ‘great’ films like the Day the Earth Stood Still churned out tons of cheap imitations, saturating the public’s view of what was possible with “Sci Fi” with low budgets & poor acting. Then comes “ALIEN” by an unknown commercial director, teamed w/ an upcoming visual artist, & sci fi writer – thus bringing together 3 different converging audiences and shattering the mainstream view, offering a more psychological sci fi film.

But essentially, what’s made “ALIEN”‘s groundbreaking effects & innovative narratives – a female protagonist, realistic rotting ships, horror/sci-fi hybrid – were made into camp with Cameron’s “ALIENS”, and Terminator 2 sealed the deal. 3 decades later, a barrage of cheap looking, obviously fake (yet occasionally innovative) animatronic & prosthetic EFX make us see the original, ALIEN, as cheap looking.

Ridley Scott’s no moron. He’s probably used an intelligent combo of Practical & Digital – any tool available to realize Lindelof’s script. And judging from the trailer, he’s even thrown some nods to Cameron’s “ALIENS” in, rather than remake his youthful lucky strike. In essence, expect sci fi/ adventure with helpful tablespoons of psychological drama & suspense.

B/c on thing ALIEN has over ALIENS is suspense… & looking back, perhaps too much for modern audiences to handle. :)

      • Django3000

Christ – apologies for the typos, folks. Should’ve read “B/c ONE thing ALIEN has over ALIENS is suspense.” … And, uh, a couple other typos in there. What was it they taught us in school about editing before you hit “post”? Oh yeah. They don’t teach about that stuff … Add a “delete comment” feature, Collider? :]

  • Rhizomeman

Awesome!!! Cannot wait to see this!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jake

Sorry to correct you, but you said that Warner Bros. just released this, and that’s 20th Century Fox.

  • Antovolk

So if this film is successful, will James Cameron do his own sequel “PROMETHEUSES”??? Sorry, I couldn’t resist. This movie looks bad a$$.

    • Django3000

I believe the proper term is “PROMETHEI”.

      *Snicker

  • Reggie

Wow not an Alien prequel my ass!!! This is looking so promising. I’ve been a lifelong fan of the Alien film series and I must admit this looks great. I’m really hoping that this movie answers all questions that have been out there since the release of the original. I’m 40 years old now soon to be 41 and the Alien movie was my first true love in sci-fi when my dad( may he rest in peace) introduced me to it. I will definitely take my little brothers to this on opening night and be super stoked to see what Ridley has in store for us. Can’t wait!!!

  • MarkHB

Wow. A proper trailer instead of a voice-overed sales pitch! Why people stopped making these, I do not know…

  • RyanR

    Amazing trailer.

  • Jarvis

At 00:29 that sure looks like the Space Jockey’s head/helmet on the disecting table in front of ole’ Charleeze…also…if anyone’s still actually trying to pass this off as anything less than an Alien prequel…I mean…come on!!!

I for one can not wait!!!

    The man’s a damned genius.

    • Batboyuk

The ‘space jockeys’ are called Engineers and if you look to the right side of the flight console you can see one, pale skin, bald head humanoid. The elephant(esque) head we saw in Alien is the helmet of the space suit

  • Evan

Ridley needs to stop saying its a totally original piece of sci-fi. This is obviously set in the Alien universe, the teaser trailer echoes the original Alien trailer.

Still, one of my most anticipated for next year ! !

  • Jay-Me-Dee

I don’t think Ridley Scott said this wasn’t an Alien prequel, per se. He just said that the Xenomorphs (Aliens) won’t appear. This one is supposed to be about the “Space Jockey” race seen in Alien….and when I saw the Space Jockey’s cannon/telescope, I lost it.

So this is set in the same “universe” as Alien/Aliens, its just not about the Aliens.

So its a prequel, in that it came before Ripley and crew ran across them, but may not tie in directly to the first film other than the Space Jockeys.

Makes sense to me, and the best approach for this franchise. The Alien VS Predator series killed it for me. Needed something different.

    • Batboyuk

The Space Jockeys are called Engineers and it’s some kind of flight console not a gun….I may or may not have been told …….( have )

Looks bad ass.I hope it leaves a similar impression to Alien, one of the greatest films ever.

  • MC ATTAck

Amazing!! I was so excited to see this trailer, that only thing i didn’t like was the “A la Inception” score. But besides that everything is dandy!

    • Yahzee

I’ts not “a la Inception”, it’s in fact a remixed version of the same music used in the Alien trailer

      • Ben

That may be so, but I agree with the OP, it’s definitely “a la Inception”…

  • hey809

looks good, too bad it wasnt a official 2min trailer. we all saw most of that footage in the 3 trailer previews.

  • Desert Rat

    Mr. Scott, Welcome Back.

  • hollywoodsdying

Wow, almost wet myself on that one. Hooray for awesome trailers! Hooray for trailers that don’t show you the entire story arc!

    • Batboyuk

      Hooray NO RUSSELL CROWE !

  • Banekilla

Definitley a scope I wasn´t expecting. Alien and Aliens too were very dark. Prometheus seems to have both darkness and light and outdoor epic set pieces. Loved every frame of the trailer.

  • FILMfan

This minute-long trailer has more going for it than the last 2 Alien and AvP films combined.

    Can’t f#@king wait

    • trick

      What’s wrong with Alien 3…?

      • FILMfan

IMO, Alien 3 is a good movie, it’s just not a great one. While Fincher did the best he could with what he was given to work with, he himself has expressed disappointment with the final result. The production was plagued with issues from the start.

  • Grayden

the architectural design of the “space jockey” ship is so closely related to what Giger designed for Alien, as well as the general “architecture” of the xenomorph environments, one could easily postulate that the “Engineers” created the xenomorphs for some reason. Either as bio-weapons to “cleanse” worlds they were going to remake, or as pets, or they were simply a mistake and got loose.

Calling them Engineers implies they create something, at the very least.

  • Max

This clearly takes place on planet LB-426. If you remember from 1979′s Alien, the Nostromo was sent under secret orders known only to android Ash (Ian Holm) to get a live specimen of the Xenomorph so that Weyland Yutani could weaponize it.

This film MUST take place before that. I mean, how else would “The Company” know about these aliens?

Also, the fact that we see the U-shaped ship and the “Space Jockey” kinda gives that away.

    This movie will be AMAZING!!

    • Jared

It does take place there, possibly, the leaked plot summary has some consistencies. But Ridley said that the last 8 minutes will transition it to the Alien series. So no need to try and figure the stuff out, Ridley has probably figured out a way to put the pieces together, after all he did help write the first movie, it was more of a supervisor than actual writing, but he had creative input. Also with Damon Lindleof(Alias, Lost, Flash Forward, Star Trek, and Fringe) as a writer, I expect some sort of time travel or worm hole type thing to solve the inconsistancies, it seems to be his go to thing in everything he writes.

  • Jared

The music, the title appearance, and the short blips of scenes are done in the exact same fashion, which is great. Plus, watching the Alien sequel, Aliens, I noticed that teraforming was mentioned in it; it has also been mentioned as part of the plot for this movie. All I know is that this movie will be great.

  • Migz13

The trailer is a nice nod to the old alien one.
This film just became one of the must-sees for me in 2012 along with all the other blockbusters:D

  • Matt

of the trailers I have seen this week, this is the one that has really gotten me excited.

  • ARTISTWKG

On TV they say that if this condition lasts more than 4 hours I am supposed to go see a Doctor.

  • jimbo

Looks good. Buzzing. I just hope they don’t make anyone into a ‘Ripley’ type. Casting of Theron (hugely overrated model) and Elba (meat on a stick) are suspect but R Scott will kick them into shape.

    • Jared

Noomi Rapace’s character is said to be the Ripley-like character, only in the fact that she’s a female lead character. Theron and Elba are jsut there to add good reputable names to the cast, plus Theron’s character is supposed to be from the Company and act like a bitch; and if Monster is anything, she can play one. Elba(as much as I hat eto say it, and I’m probably going to regret this) is just there because the first two Alien movies have black guys porteaying somewhat of a commander role, and they always die, but this could be different seeing as Elba is also the mighty Heimdahl.

      • kashirwin

What did you mean by “mighty Heimdahl” ?!?

      • Jared

It’s who he played in “THOR”.

  • redha

    oooeeeee mantap that nyan

  • tarsane

in short generic looking, painfully bright cinematography (put alien in Hawaiian shirt why don’t you), generally a step back
Scott, Spilberg, Cameron, Lucas are old grandpas that do stuff for that last snap of dough now – not artists anymore.

    • John

How many feature films have you made, since you appear to be an expert.

Prometheus is clearly a film that has potential to be more than generic.

  • ZW

I loved watching the Alien trailer before the Prometheus trailer. You can see alot of similarities with how the trailer is set up and played out. I am very excited to see this movie.

  • Andrew

I’m mega excited about Prometheus,…more than any other movie in 2012.Roll on June!!

  • Al

THis looks great. THE FILM INFORMANT did a great job disecting this trailer and how it compares to the Alian trailer…
