PSA Sunday: How to Talk to Your Kids About STAR WARS

PSA How to Talk to Your Kids About STAR WARS slice

“We’re going to keep her Jar Jar Binks free for as long as possible.”

With the Star Wars movies finally hitting Blu-ray, many parents are grappling with the decision on how to show their kids the Star Wars movies.  Should they start with The Phantom Menace? Should they start with A New Hope?  Also, how much should they tell their kids about the Skywalker family before actually showing them the movies?  While I normally use PSA Sunday’s to showcase a funny PSA featuring TV or movie characters and/or celebrities telling you not to do something, I think the debate on how and when to show your kids the Star Wars movies is something that at least a few people are thinking about.

So if you’re a parent and wondering what to do, hit the jump and watch some dads discuss how they will talk to their kids about Star Wars.  Also, I’d love to hear what some of you have done with your kids, as I have a few nephews and am wondering what I should do myself.  Please leave your thoughts in the comments.

For more PSA’s, here’s some vintage Star Wars PSA’s (the Cantina aliens in a “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk” campaign, C3P0 and R2D2 talking about the dangers of whooping cough, and C3PO/R2D2 warning you about smoking), Clint Eastwood telling you not to do crack cocaine, the Transformers warning kids about running away from home and not to bike without reflectors, and the last two weeks featured Nathan Fillion talking about Swamp Ass and Kaley Cuoco addressing an important issue affecting cosplay girls across the globe: Slave Leia fatigue.

To be honest, none of my kids loves Star Wars. I don’t know if it is a good or a bad thing.

However, they loved Lord of the Rings. They all watched the 3 parts when they were 5. Gollum was their favorite character.

No need for my parents to teach me about Star Wars, I’ve been watching those movies since I was two years old :) I’m fourteen now.

When I have kids, when they’re around 4 or 5 I’ll start them in the order in which they were made: IV, V, VI, I, II, III. But then, I’ll have them watch IV-VI again, hopefully helping them gain the same new and fresh perspective on various aspects of the OT as I did. So, IV, V, VI, I, II, III, IV, V, VI. :)

I’ll show them the OT first when they’re about 4 or 5, then I’ll wait till they’re around 9 (the same age I was at when I saw TPM) to show them the prequels. That way they’ll have grown up enough with the OT that they’ll be able to recognize how awful phantom menace is but still young enough to enjoy the spectacle and tragedy of the latter prequels.

The Lego Star Wars games are a really good entry point for kids.

My kids can suffer the same crushing depression I did when they see the prequels 20 years after I’ve shown them the originals.

I tried to start my kids on Phantom Menace. They were immediately bored to tears.. there is an AMAZING amount of talking in that film.

My 3yo just watched the original New Hope last weekend. Han shot first, and he really likes R2D2.

We’re going to wait a few of years, and several repeats of New Hope, before we show him Empire and Jedi. We want to make sure that the important things (Han shot first) are well established before we expose him to Ewoks.

We may allow him to see the ‘Clone Wars’ animated series in between, but no, we’re not going to tell him Anakin = Vader = Luke’s dad. It’s important he not know that until after Empire.

It’s my job to see that his education unfolds at the proper rate, and is complete. I do not undertake this lightly. When he is grown, he will know, Han shot first!
