The character Puss in Boots has been one of the few redeeming aspects of the Shrek franchise and so DreamWorks Animation is making sure to drive him into the ground.  With only two DWA films set for release this year instead of the usual three (how will they ever feed their children!), Puss in Boots is the holiday tentpole for the studio while Kung Fu Panda 2 is aiming for the summer crowd.

The studio has now released a teaser trailer and poster for Puss in Boots and they have me struggling to remember why I liked the character in the first place.  Basically, the teaser says “It’s Zorro, but he’s a sassy kitty cat.  Give us your money.”  Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Puss in Boots features the voices of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Zach Galifianakis.  It opens in 3D on November 4th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Puss in Boots:

“Puss in Boots – One of the most beloved characters of the Shrek Universe – tells the hilarious and courageous (daring, bold, brave) tale of Puss’ (Antonio Banderas) early adventures as he teams with mastermind Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and the street-savvy Kitty (Salma Hayek) to steal the famed Goose that lays the Golden Eggs.”

So let’s go over the checklist, shall we?

    1. Lame parody of something completely irrelevant (in this case, Inception)? Check.

    2. Bad pop music and character walking sassily towards the camera? Check.

    3. Raised eyebrow and an arrogant smirk? Check.

*Sigh* I thought DreamWorks might have actually grown up as a studio after How To Train Your Dragon, but I guess they’re still completely useless without the guiding brilliance of Sanders and DeBlois.

      4. One sarcastic Hater of even the tiniest teaser trailer, Geared up to lambast the full trailer when it arrives but will possibly go see the actual movie and possibly even enjoy it.

      5. Waits for others to join the bandwagon.

*Sigh* Some people should really wait to see a movie before putting out the bad vibes, or at least a trailer that actually shows some of the film. It is quite obvious that all of this teaser will not even feature in the movie, and was made just to let people know its coming out.

I’m sorry if I’m cynical, but DreamWorks has given me every right to be. I’m huge fan of movies, particularly animation, and I appreciate stories that use the medium effectively, and DreamWorks, more often than not, does not.

The first two Shreks were good, as was Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon was excellent, but everything else they have put out goes down the scale from mediocre (Madagascar, Antz) to downright terrible (Madagascar 2, Shrek the Third, etc.).

How to Train Your Dragon was such a breath of fresh air from that studio, after Monsters vs. Aliens I had completely given up hope on the studio, and when I saw the poster for their new movie, I rolled my eyes and expected it to be equally awful. But then I watched the teaser trailer, and to my surprise it looked good. Really good, actually, and I got really excited for it. In the end the movie was amazing, and rivals some of the stuff that Pixar has done, so it makes it even harder to see DreamWorks go back to the same old trash that they’ve done countless times.

So yes, I’m cynical, but it’s not just the teaser trailer that I’m basing my condemnation on, it’s DreamWorks entire history or lame movies that doesn’t seem to be broken here. I will say though, that I’m cautiously optimistic for Kung Fu Panda 2.

Lets not forget the worst animated feature possibly ever. The atrocious Shark Tale.

DreamWorks really kills some of their movies with ill-timed use of pop songs.

It’s considered sophisticated humour for shallow ten year olds.
