Quentin Tarantino’s Top 10 Films of 2013 So Far Includes GRAVITY, THIS IS THE END, and THE LONE RANGER

Quentin Tarantino loves, loves, loves movies.  The filmmaker has made this abundantly clear not only through the various and obscure influences gleaned in his own films but also in his many lengthy discussions on any number of topics relating to film.  Tarantino makes a point to go to the movies as often as possible, and recently he has taken to publicly publishing a list of his Top 10 movies from each year.  He took 2012 off since he was understandably busy working on Django Unchained, but his 2011 and 2010 lists were gleefully varied, with movies like Midnight in Paris and The Social Network ranking right up there with The Three Musketeers and Jackass 3D.

It appears that Tarantino plans on publishing another full Top 10 list later this year, but he’s gotten a jump on things and released a list of his 10 favorite films of 2013 thus far.  As expected, there are more than a couple of surprising choices.  Hit the jump to take a look.

frances-ha-posterCourtesy of The Tarantino Film Archives, here is the filmmaker’s Top 10 Films of 2013 – So Far, in alphabetical order:

Afternoon Delight (Jill Soloway)

Before Midnight (Richard Linklater)

Blue Jasmine (Woody Allen)

The Conjuring (James Wan)

Drinking Buddies (Joe Swanberg)

Frances Ha (Noah Baumbach)

Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón)

Kick-Ass 2 (Jeff Wadlow)

The Lone Ranger (Gore Verbinski)

This Is the End (Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg)

Midnight in Paris topped Tarantino’s 2011 list so the inclusion of Blue Jasmine isn’t a big surprise, and he also singled out Kick-Ass in 2010 so it’s fitting that he would throw the sequel in there this year, but QT is likely one of the very, very few to single out The Lone Ranger.  Nevertheless, this list is wonderfully eclectic, with a nice mix of indies, dramas, comedies, and blockbusters.  Again it would be nice to see some sort of explanation for each choice, but it’s nice to get a peek into QT’s current tastes regardless.  It’ll be interesting to see what makes the final cut after the next few months.

Hey, Don’t discourage him from seeing it ! If he wants to see it because Quentin Tarantino says we should see it then by all means, we should see it then !!!

    • Sean

Yes, You certainly should see it. It is a great movie. I saw it and really really enjoyed it all the way through its entirety :) .

It was actually really bizarrely awful in a mind numbingly boring way.

His movies are great but his choices are shit! He puted Paul W.S. Anderson’s 3 Musketeers in his top ten. The Lone Ranger, Ha ?

‘Lone Ranger’s an odd choice, but hey, we’ve all got guilty pleasures. That plus he may have been told to promote the film. I don’t know if he’s close with anybody who worked on the movie.

    • Gerard Kennelly

my guilty pleasure is TANGO AND CASH

      • MrBurrrns

That’s not a guilty pleasure, that sir is a classic! :)

  • derek

I havent seen Lone Ranger, but i believe technically/camerawork the film is an achievement. Probably why he chose it along with other bad ones. Kick ass 2 was terrible.

See guys, people need to stop follow critics words and have his own opinions, Quentin Tarantino proves a point here.

    • Jason Richards

He proves he likes shit movies. There’s no point being made here.

      • Ashtalon

There is a point. No one will agree with someone else 100% of the time. People love to bag on reviewers for not liking something they do.

      • bombinUSA

says the guy who looks at the rotten tomatoes rating and likes movies solely based on that without actually watching said movie. haaahaha, you’re a loser.

      • RiddleThemThis

I think the point is, that people think Tarantino is a god. So clearly, if Tarantino likes the lone ranger, its better than what most critics say. We should also disregard everything that critics say and only judge the film based on Tarantino’s opinion of it.

      • Gerard Kennelly

day lewis and deniro are gods

I also wonder if they feel like gods when they are taking a dump.

The Lone Ranger isn’t the Shining. There are great films that occasionally don’t get the reception they deserve from critics first time around, but this is not one of them, lmao

Lone Ranger ? 3 musketeers ? Kick ass 2 ? This confirms that the man loves shitty movies.

    • RiddleThemThis

Of course he does, what do you think inspires him to make some of his own?

    • GrimReaper07

He loves shitty movies, yeah, but not as much as he loves great movies.

      • Gerard Kennelly

he called DRIVE a ‘nice try’

      • GrimReaper07

I loved Drive with a passion but I also get that Tarantino is eccentric. His tastes vary wildly but at the end of the day I’d say he does have good taste.

      • Gerard Kennelly

        i agree :)

    • junierizzle

Let the first person to have never liked a “shitty movie” throw the first stone.

      • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

one shitty movie is a guilty pleasure. More than three is something you must be worried about.

I enjoyed The Lone Ranger, the final action sequence especially. Looks like I’m in the minority.

    • Sean

No, I also really enjoyed it! It was very very good in my opinion!

    • Gerard Kennelly

      that was the best scene

    Yea for Drinking Buddies.

  • dungeons and draccus’s

Typical arthouse sh*t with a few violent, profane blockbusters thrown in. Hey, he’s a great director, but whenever I see his smarmy, douchey face I want to punch it. Hey, still, great director.

  • Tyler

If Quentin Tarantino liked Lone Ranger, maybe the critics are kinda-sorta wrong? Maybe?

    • mbmarquis69

      Magical thinking.

  • Raptor Jesus

I’m happy for anyone who is so easily amused.

But sad for anyone who thought ‘This is the End’ was anything but vulgar, stupid and pointless. It was a very, very bad movie. Unless you’re a twelve year old boy. Then you might enjoy it.

    • MrBurrrns

      I liked it.

      • Raptor Jesus

        I’m happy for you.

It was a clever idea, but didn’t go anywhere. The CGI monsters were cool.

But it looks like they filmed the first draft.

      • dingleberry

Yeah because most of it was improvised…. I liked that movie you were in btw!

    • Brontosaurus Satan

It was filmed that way on purpose. It was meant to be funny, vulgar, stupid and over-the-top. Just like you only without the funny, vulgar or over-the-top.

Not surprised at all with Lone Ranger. There are classic westerns that are morality tales, and classic westerns that have some new wave, and classic westerns that are spaghetti. But everyone seems to forget Lone Ranger is going back to the big bombastic, doopey westerns. If done right, who cares if its stupid. I’d say doopey film making is still a mile above Michael Bay film making. Difference between doopey and dumb.

And even besides my tastes, Tarantino likes all cinema (and is a huge defender of blockbusters, and quirky classics).

I loved this Lone ranger movie as well. I also never pay any attention to whatever they say about it either.

  • Red

It doesn’t surprise me added Kick-Ass 2, even though I enjoyed it as well.

  • frillbot

The only 2 I’ve seen on his list are ‘The Conjuring’ & ‘Gravity’…..I do want to see ‘This Is The End’. I’ve been watching all the Tarantino films that are part of his XX box-set collection…..and recently saw ‘Django’. I’ve already seen the stuff in the box-set multiple times over the years: ‘Reservoir Dogs’, ‘True Romance’, ‘Pulp Fiction’, ‘Kill Bill’ ( vols 1 & 2 ), ‘Death Proof’, ‘Inglorious Basterds’, & ‘Jackie Brown’…….but wanted all the special features. He certainly is ‘enthusiastic’, isn’t he?
