The good news is that The Complete Indiana Jones Blu-ray Collection is on its way; the GREAT news is that you’ll soon be able to watch Raiders of the Lost Ark in IMAX!  As the films were prepared for the Blu-ray conversion, Paramount and Steven Spielberg worked with IMAX to reformat the first film in the trilogy into the 70mm version. Raiders of the Lost Ark will be re-released in IMAX starting Friday, September 7th to September 13th.  Look for details in the next few days as to which theaters will be showing the IMAX re-release.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer for the Blu-ray collection and an informative session on how movies are converted into IMAX.  [Hit the jump for an update, including new details, comments from Spielberg and news on an Indiana Jones Marathon.]

I watched Indy a while back and noticed some pretty phony set design. The side of that pit he climbs out of with his whip bounces around like it’s spray painted canvas, for example. If I can see that on my old SD TV, I can only imagine what IMAX will reveal. This might be a case of, “just because we can, doesn’t mean we should”.

Hey the old comments system is back. Long live the old comments system!

You know, I don’t hold classics to today’s production values. Raiders is infinitely more worthy of seeing in IMAX than most other films. I’ll be watching, and glad of the opportunity!

    • Henny

Blasphemy! Obviously you never saw The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises on IMAX.

      • MadMatt

I think you misunderstand Lance here Henny. He’s responding to the suggestion earlier by another commenter that Raiders doesn’t hold up very well. So he’s saying that he doesn’t expect older films to match the technical production values of modern films, and doesn’t care – of all the older films to be converted, Raiders is the most worthy of the BIG screen. At least, I think that’s what he means.

Sounds like Paramount is only going to re-release the film in Digital LIMAX, they’re too cheap to make any 15/70 IMAX prints of this classic which sucks because those Digital Multiplex IMAX screens suck, smaller theatre and smaller screen. There is no difference between digital IMAX and TDS, or Real D, etc. so to put their name on that is lame. When you hear “Raiders” and IMAX you automatically think of the gigantic screen with the remastered blow up 15/70 print. I could understand the studio being cheap and avoiding actual IMAX prints if this was “She’s Out of My League” but “Raiders?” Come on!!!

Maybe they just haven’t released information for the real IMAX screens yet, because what would be the point of retrofitting it to 70mm?

  • Anthony Morales

so the 2nd blu-ray disk from the the Indy 4 blu-ray wont be included ?
im just trying to figure out if i should sell that set or not
