It’s good to have a backup plan in case "officer manager at the regional sales office of a paper company" doesn’t work out. Luckily for The Office’s Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson), his family owns a beet farm that doubles as a bed and breakfast. There are reports that Wilson may be headed out of The Office as early as midseason 2013 for an NBC spinoff, a family comedy centered around Dwight and life at the Schrute Farms B&B. Pitched by Wilson and Paul Lieberstein (who executive produces, writes and acts as Toby Flenderson on the show), the duo plan to produce alongside The Office’s executive producers Ben Silverman and Howard Klein. Hit the jump for more news on the potential spinoff.

on the possible spinoff from NBC’s The Office, the parent show of which would soon be entering its ninth season if renewed. This would serve as a segue of sorts for Wilson who would return to The Office in the fall and leave for the farm for the spring. The groundwork for the new series has already been laid in previous episodes highlighting either the Schrute family/beet farm/bed & breakfast or Dwight’s displeasure at being overlooked for the managerial position that Michael (Steve Carell) recently vacated. Perhaps we’ll get a flavor of what this new show might be like during an upcoming episode of The Office which will be directed by Wilson, who tweeted:

RainnWilson @rainnwilson

I'm directing an awesome episode of The Office this week. It's a show about people who work in an office.

If Dwight leaves The Office, stick a beet fork in it. I’ve enjoyed this latest season even without Carell’s presence, but the increasingly busy schedules of Ed Helms (Andy Bernard), John Krasinski (Jim Halpert) and Mindy Kaling (Kelly Kapoor) may spell the death knell for The Office. Then again, they can just open another spinoff or “branch” in another city, right?
