Thursday TV Ratings: COMMUNITY Returns Up, PARKS AND RECREATION Earns Season High, DO NO HARM Plummets

Thursday evening’s TV ratings are in.  Here’s a brief look at the highlights:

  • After a last-minute postponement from its planned October bow, season four of Community finally kicked off last night and the results—ratingswise at least—are pretty good.  The premiere scored a 1.8 rating and 3.98 million viewers, which is up 6% from its 2011 season three premiere rating of 1.7 and up 38% from the season three finale rating of 1.3.  Creator Dan Harmon’s absence was certainly felt creatively in the episode, but it appears that fans are still keen on keeping up with the goings-on at Greendale Community College.
  • A particularly sharp episode of Parks and Recreation featuring quite possibly the funniest scene in the show’s history notched a season-high 2.0 rating and 3.83 million viewers, which is up 18% from its last original episode’s 1.7 rating.
  • NBC’s new series Do No Harm, which scored the lowest-rated debut in network TV history last week, fell even harder last night with a 0.7 rating and 2.18 viewers for a 22% drop from last week’s 0.9 rating.

Hit the jump for the full ratings report for Thursday, February 7th, including The Big Bang Theory, Grey’s Anatomy, Elementary, The Vampire Diaries, 1600 Penn, and more.

NBC

  • parks-and-recreation-anns-decisionCommunity’s season four premiere kicked things off for NBC’s comedy block in lieu of 30 Rock’s swan song last week, notching an uptick in viewership for a 1.8 rating and 3.98 million viewers.  The episode was up 6% from last season’s premiere rating of 1.7 and up 38% from last season’s finale rating of 1.3.  I was a little mixed on the episode’s quality overall re: the new showrunners’ take on the series, but the phenomenal cast still makes the show well worth watching.
  • Last night’s excellent food poisoning-infused episode of Parks and Recreation garnered a 2.0 rating and 3.83 million viewers for a season high, up 18% over its last new episode’s 1.7 rating.
  • The departing The Office was even with last week’s performance, scoring a 2.1 rating and 4.25 million viewers.
  • The new comedy series 1600 Penn doesn’t seem to be catching on very well, as last night’s episode hit a series-low 1.1 rating and 2.81 million viewers.  That’s a 15% drop from its last original episode’s 1.3 rating.
  • The new drama series Do No Harm confirmed its DOA status last night with a 0.7 rating and 2.18 million viewers for a 22% drop from last week’s incredibly low premiere rating of 0.9.

CBS

  • the-big-bang-theory-the-spoiler-alert-segmentationThough Community’s rise is indeed encouraging, it was no match for the behemoth that is The Big Bang Theory which saw a massive surge in viewership last night with a 6.1 rating and 18.85 million viewers. That’s up 13% from last week’s 5.4 rating.  The show was by far the highest-rated and most-watched show of the evening (yes, even higher than American Idol)
  • Two and a Half Men also saw an uptick with a 4.1 rating and 14.15 million viewers, which is up 5% from last week’s 3.9 rating.
  • The “homeless Batman” procedural Person of Interest garnered a 3.2 rating and 15.16 million viewers, which is even with last week’s performance.
  • Coming off its post-Super Bowl slot, Elementary hit a 2.3 rating and 11.02 million viewers.  That’s a modest rise of 5% from last week’s 2.2 rating, though it doesn’t look to have picked up a considerable number of viewers from Sunday’s broadcast.

ABC

  • Over on ABC, Grey’s Anatomy scored a 3.1 rating and 8.82 million viewers.  That’s up 11% from last week’s 2.8 rating.
  • Scandal matched its season-high rating of 2.8 and scored 8 million viewers for a rise of 4% from last week’s 2.7 rating.

The CW

  • The teen-favorite series The Vampire Diaries took a bit of a dive, scoring a 1.1 rating and 2.5 million viewers.  That’s down 15% from last week’s 1.3 rating.
  • Beauty and the Beast was also down, notching a 0.6 rating and 1.52 million viewers for a drop of 14% from last week’s 0.7 rating.
