Showtime has just released the full trailer for Ray Donovan Season 3, in which the titular Hollywood fixer, played by a reliably pickled Liev Schreiber, takes on a new client in the personage of Ian McShane‘s Malcolm Finney. The trailer focuses mainly on how Ray’s relationship with Finney, including his daughter, Paige (Katie Holmes), leads to him to (yet again) reconsider his choice of profession. That doubt, per usual, becomes twice as potent when he gets involved with his father, Mickey (Jon Voight), who continues his own side of the dirty business at hand. The series seems to be building to another blowout between Ray and Mickey, as Malcolm Finney’s line about happy families feels like a direct parallel with what the Donovan family has been weathering for the last two seasons.
More interesting is the trailer’s insinuation that the incarceration of Terry, Ray’s brother, played by the brilliant British actor Eddie Marsan, will take center stage alongside the Finney family’s exploits as the focus of Season 3. The best sequences and episodes of the series thus far have largely featured Marsan, though Elliott Gould, Steven Bauer, and Paula Malcomson, who plays Ray’s better half, have all made their impressions on the ever-so-slightly underrated series. Beyond the two main plotlines of Terry in prison and the other Donovans handling the Finney family, the trailer doesn’t give much more of a sign as to what to expect from Season 3, but the show’s history of getting acute performances out of a bevy of major league character actors.
Ray Donovan Season 3 debuts Sunday, July 12th, at 9 p.m. on Showtime. Watch the trailer below:
