New Line Cinema is moving forward with its remake of the 1980 Goldie Hawn-fronted comedy Private Benjamin, and the studio has now settled on the film’s lead. The Wrap reports that Pitch Perfect actress Rebel Wilson will star in the redo, which will follow a redneck (Wilson) and a rich city girl “who get more than they bargained for when they enlist in the Marines to escape their present situations.” The original film, scripted by Nancy Meyers, revolved around a woman who joins the Army after her new husband dies during sex on their wedding night. The pic spawned a short-lived TV series adaptation that aired from 1981 to 1983, but this new film updates the premise as a two-hander set in the Marines. More after the jump.
New Line has been working on a remake of Private Benjamin for a few years now and previously had Anna Faris attached to star, but The Wrap doesn’t have any details regarding this iteration of the script or a possible director, so the film may still be a ways off. Mark Gordon (The To Do List) is producing.
Wilson currently stars on the ABC sitcom Super Fun Night and will reprise her role in the musical comedy sequel Pitch Perfect 2, which starts filming soon. She’ll be seen on the big screen in another sequel, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, this December. Shawn Levy returns to direct the third installment in that series, which stars Ben Stiller.
