The UK trailer for Rodrigo CortesRed Lights has gone online.  The film stars Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver as scientists who investigate paranormal activity, and who find a dangerous challenge when controversial psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) comes out of retirement.  I caught the movie at Sundance and thought it was terrific up until the ending, which not only leaves the movie on a sour note, but undoes a lot of what was accomplished earlier in the picture.  There’s a chance the ending has been changed (most of the people I spoke to at Sundance also had a problem with it), but we’ll have to wait and see.  The UK trailer does a fairly solid job of selling the film, although it should play up the paranormal investigations from the first half of the movie since those are the best parts.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Toby Jones and Elizabeth OlsenRed Lights opens in the UK on June 22nd and in the US on July 13th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Red Lights:

A psychological thriller which explores the human brain’s perception mechanisms and the diffuse frontiers between belief and science, RED LIGHTS starts out from the experiences of two rationalist scientists who dissect phenomena from the metapsychic world, and the clash of forces with a world famous psychic they bring about. The past and the present of each the protagonists contain still unrevealed shadows, setting in train a dark story of growing tension, full of unexpected twists and turns.

See, I’m one of the few for whom the ending (the ending in the script I read, anyway) absolutely worked. I’ll be crushed if Cortes caves in and changes it. (It might well be a question of music: the stuff I’ve heard is a little bombastic for psychological-thriller fare; the ending really calls for something more contemplative and haunting– like the music at the end of Julie Taymor’s “Titus” or “Ripley’s Game.”) Then again, that’ll leave alternate-ending goodies for the Blu-Ray, won’t it…?

“There’s a chance the ending has been changed (most of the people I spoke to at Sundance also had a problem with it), but we’ll have to wait and see. ”

Firstly, Goldberg, you’re an idiot, so I assume that the people that you know are also stupid. Secondly, and more importantly, you may not like a film or parts of it, but to suggest that the filmmaker should change elements speaks of unbelievable arrogance on your part. You are a critic, not a filmmaker,.

It doesn’t take a filmmaker to know when an ending “undoes” the rest of the movie and it’s the type of ending I don’t personally enjoy because I tend to get vested in the movies I watch. I often disagree with Matt Goldberg’s take on things and his attitude, etc. but that doesn’t negate what very well may be a big problem with this very promising looking movie.
