Virginia Madsen has signed on to play mother to Amanda Seyfried in Red Riding Hood, a “gothic horror reimagining” of the fairy tale.  This is director Catherine Hardwicke’s follow-up to the first entry in The Twilight Saga.  She’s working with a script from Orphan scribe David Leslie Johnson, which (per Variety) is “set in a village haunted by a werewolf.”  Madsen and Seyfried will be joined  by Lukas Haas, Shiloh Fernandez, Julie Christie, and Gary Oldman on screen when March 11, 2011.

Hit the jump for casting details for the Showtime Laura Linney comedy The Big C and the wedding rom-com Jumping the Broom.

laz_alonzo_imageAccording to Deadline, Reid Scott has joined the cast of the cancer-centric dark comedy The Big C, in a “heavily recurring role” as the show’s resident oncologist.  Linney stars as a “suburban wife and mother who reclaims her life after a terminal cancer diagnosis.”

For the sake of brevity, we’ll continue to call this one a comedy.  But given the subject matter and the network, I would assume The Big C will be on brand with Weeds, Nurse Jackie, and The United States of Tara — half-hour series centered around strong females that never really go for “haha funny.”  That’s fine by me; Showtime continues to provide great roles for actresses in a medium that is otherwise lacking. The Big C premieres on August 16th.

On the flip side of the somber spectrum, Sony has plenty of reason to celebrate with the light-hearted wedding ceremony at the center of Jumping the BroomVariety reports that Laz Alonso (Avatar) will star opposite Angela Bassett (Notorious) and Paula Patton (Precious) in the romantic comedy, which “focuses on a weekend wedding in Martha’s Vineyard where two families of different socioeconomic backgrounds clash during their first meeting before the event.”  Not exactly uncharted territory, but the charming leads — joined by Mike Epps, Loretta Devine, and Romeo Miller — ought to liven things up.  Salim Akil (Soul Food) is set to direct.
