RESIDENT EVIL 6 Update: No Release Date. No Script. But Director Paul W.S. Anderson and Screen Gems Want to Make it

     February 1, 2014

About a year ago, a rumor hit that Resident Evil 6 would be released on September 12, 2014.  However, with it now being February, and no information on filming, casting, or anything Resident Evil 6-related since that release date story, I figured the project was either filming under the greatest veil of secrecy ever or the release date was incorrect.  As you can probably guess, it’s the latter.

Just a few hours ago, I sat down with writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson for his disaster epic, Pompeii, and I asked him the status of the next Resident Evil.  According to Anderson, he only finished Pompeii a few days ago and hasn’t begun to think about anything but a vacation.  However, he did say, “we’d like to do another Resident Evil movie. Definitely.  But the wheels aren’t quite in motion yet.”  Hit the jump for more.

resident-evil-6From what I understand, Anderson hasn’t begun writing the script, but he did tell us awhile ago that he had a story in mind for Resident Evil 6 that involved a lot of death and would bring the franchise to a close.  In addition , I ran into Screen Gems President, Clint Culpepper, at the junket and he made it very clear that another Resident Evil was a priority and he was just waiting on Anderson to move forward.

If I were a betting man, I’d imagine Anderson is going to get started on the script in the near future and it’ll be in front of cameras by the end of the year with a fall 2015 release date.  But that’s just an educated guess.  I do not have anything confirmed.

Here’s what Anderson told me about Resident Evil 6.  Look for the full interview in the coming weeks.

Paul W.S. Anderson:

  • What is the status of the next Resident Evil movie?
  • Says “we’d like to do another Resident Evil movie. Definitely.  But the wheels aren’t quite in motion yet.”

No script? Isn’t that good enough?

    • GunzOfNavarone

The last one didn’t have much of a script and it didn’t stop him.

    • Explodin’Grandmas

Damn, you beat me to it…

  • ScratStitch

Here come the hating trolls who are gonna scream “Reboot! Boo! Make it just like the games!” in 3…2….

    • eternalozzie

      (crickets chirping)

    • varagor

How about just “make it not suck”?

  • Michael N.

Will this guy, which body of work is an abomination to the world, please stop make movies.

  • huff/doback

It’s ironic that the guy who regularly makes movies that are creatively bankrupt disasters is making an actual disaster movie. I feel like this guy and Timur Bekmambetov are in constant competition to see who can make the most mediocre drivel which imitates popular movies that came before.

    • PinkFlamingo

Paul is way better than Timur.

      • huff/doback

That’s like saying that being raped is better than having your dick sliced off with a dull rusty garden tool.

      • Norbert

They both have one good movie in their past

They HAVE to make another one. The final shot of RE5 was a masterpiece of compositing, and the best cliffhanger since RE1.

    • Michael N.

You should never be aloud to use the word “masterpiece” again.

      • RiddleThemThis

You should never be allowed to use the word “aloud” again.

      • James

        You got him there hahah

Do they need scripts for these films?

  • Steven

    No script ?

The joke writes itself. These films have had their enjoyable moments. 2 and 4 were good fun but compared to other zombie franchises, they’re very dull.

    • RiddleThemThis

I quite enjoyed number 5, I wouldn’t call it an amazing film, but I thought some of the fight sequences were fantastic. Now the shootouts on the other hand, those were pretty weak, and the movie definitely doesn’t get any awards for acting, story or dialogue. That being said though, the only actor I had a problem with was Johann Urb and overall I did enjoy myself while watching it.

  • eternalozzie

These have become quite boring … they have the potential to be scary but it’s like they don’t even want to put forth effort any more.

    • James

They can’t do scary, all they can do is action. They have no concept of what it would take to do scary, nor would the studios allow them to do anything but action. Action makes far more than scary for the most part, ergo they make garbage action movies and sell it to stupid people. If they made it like the first game, it could have been decent, and relatively scary if they had any idea what they were doing at all. 5 was by far the worst yet, the writing is epicly bad… I like how they added characters just for fans, with absolutely no writing besides that they would be in the film.

  • mattinacan

it must suck being the terrible Paul Anderson

    • alk

How can you say that when he’s married to Milla Jovovich?? No wonder he can continue to churn out complete SH*T and still wake up with a fcking winning smile, and face the world despite everything.

      • mattinacan

um, first she is not that good looking. second, no one respects him in the field of work he has chosen. he desperately needs some talent and quick.

  • Brad

At this point, can Anderson even remember how many Resident Evil films have been made? It’s like Luc Besson trying to figure out how many sloppy, Paris-set action-thrillers he’s produced in the last 15 years. Or James Spader attempting to differentiate one ’80s Andrew McCarthy vehicle from the next. Don’t they just all meld together?

  • orianalianna

His Resident Evil is the Battlefield Earth of Hollywood. It’s so awful that you black out and can’t even remember what the hell you watched or when the movie began much less ended – you walk out in a stoned daze. He has noting else but RE to keep him floating above water but major studios won’t touch the project – so not all in Hollywood is insane. Some movies ought to never be made and this mans bonkers RE is one of them.

hire me! i got a good storyline for the next 5 more movies

  • TheMattedScreen

I’d rather he beat down the doors at Paramount and get them to locate the cut footage from Event Horizon – THAT is something I want to see… and if they wanted to convert it to 3D while redoing some of the effects shots, it’d be okay with that too.

  • Marineboy

No script? No release date? Good news then :)

  • Redjester

I’m not sure what’s worse, Anderson’s Resident Evil franchise or that stupid Fast and Furious one. Probably a toss-up…

  • brNdon

No script. No release date. Filming is completed though.

  • cezar211091 .

    someone shoot this guy

  • mattinacan

pompeii is going to be so terrible

  • BrutalDEEJAY

    Great so 2015 then? *sighs*

I think project alice portrayed by his wife Milla Jovovich is an abomination, Paul W. S. Anderson is an awful director, and his so-called “Resident Evil” franchise is a humiliation to the original games.

Resident Evil: Degeneration and Resident Evil: Damnation are the REAL AWESOME Resident Evil films!
