Sony Pictures has released the first Ricki and the Flash trailer. Meryl Streep stars as a musician who abandoned her family when she was young in order to seek fame in California. Years later, she returns home and attempts to resume her role as a mother. The cast also includes Kevin Kline as Ricki’s ex-husband, real-life daughter Mamie Gummer as her fictional daughter, and Rick Springfield, who plays a Flash member in love with Ricki.

With Academy Award winning director Jonathan Demme at the helm, a screenplay by Oscar-winning Juno scribe Diablo Cody, and umpteen winner/nominee Streep in the lead, this movie has a fairly formidable amount of pedigree. My primary interest was in seeing the return of Demme to the director's chair given that he hasn't helmed a major feature film in quite a few years, but watching this first trailer I'm reminded of one thing that we all kind of take for granted: Meryl Streep is unrivaled in her talent. It gets said so often that it's become a cliche, but she's so good at what she does; it feels effortless. The film itself looks like it could be a little on the schmaltz side, but regardless I'm curious to see what this trifecta of Demme/Cody/Streep has put together.

Check out the debut trailer below. Ricki and the Flash opens August 7th and also stars Sebastian Stan and Audra McDonald.

Here’s the official synopsis for Ricki and the Flash:

Three-time Academy Award® winner Meryl Streep goes electric and takes on a whole new gig – a hard-rocking singer/guitarist – for Oscar®-winning director Jonathan Demme and Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody in the uplifting comedy Ricki and the Flash. In a film loaded with music and live performance, Streep stars as Ricki, a guitar heroine who gave up everything for her dream of rock-and-roll stardom, but is now returning home to make things right with her family. Streep stars opposite her real-life daughter Mamie Gummer, who plays her fictional daughter; Rick Springfield, who takes on the role of a Flash member in love with Ricki; and Kevin Kline, who portrays Ricki’s long-suffering ex-husband.
