Vin Diesel has been all too happy to share tidbits of information and concept art from the upcoming Riddick, but production on the sequel was halted when the production company ran out of money, and couldn't pay the owner of the Montreal studio where filming was underway.  However, TMZ [via CinemaBlend] is reporting  that the movie has secured new financing, paid off its debt, and that filming is set to resume on December 28th. As we previously reported, Riddick is trying to keep costs more along the lines of Pitch Black in order to maintain an R-rating and (hopefully) have an easier time of turning a profit.  2004's The Chronicles of Riddick flopping at the box office sent the franchise into stasis (although they were able to squeeze out the video game Assault on Dark Athena in 2009). Hopefully, the production won't have to worry about being shut down again.

David Twohy's Riddick also stars Karl Urban and possibly Andreas Apergis, Katee Sackhoff, Bokeem Woodbine, and Dave Bautista.  Hit the jump for the official synopsis.  If filming does pick up before year's end and Riddick can find distribution, it might hit theaters in 2012.

Here's the official synopsis for Riddick:

Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick (Diesel) fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction.
