Vin Diesel Provides Updates on RIDDICK Release Date and Sequels

     May 1, 2012

Vin Diesel recently posted some updates on his Facebook page that suggest we might be seeing Riddick as early as January of next year.  Principal photography wrapped recently on Riddick, the third film in a franchise that started with Pitch Black. While Diesel was hoping to see a release in 2012, this comes as a good sign that the studio is happy with what they’re seeing.  That bodes well, not only for Riddick, but for the potential sequels if Riddick proves commercially successful.  Be sure to check out some images from set here. The extensive cast includes Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, Jordi Molla, Bokeem Woodbine, David Bautista, Matt Nable, Conrad Pla, Raoul Trujillo, Nolan Funk, and Keri Hilson. Hit the jump to see what Diesel had to say.

Here are Diesel’s comments he posted via his Facebook page:

riddick-movie-image-set-photo-mercsThe studio said the earliest they could release the new “Riddick” is in January… was hoping for 2012… but, it’s on the horizon.

P.s. I think they are liking what they are seeing… haha, cause they asked when both Underverse and Furya would be ready to make and release… haha… now that’s a ways in the future but it is exciting.

And here’s the official synopsis from Riddick:

vin-diesel-riddick-set-imageThe latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000′s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.

While it may seem a little simplistic, I think the premise is exactly the type of setting RIDDICK was supposed to be told in. Short little episodic tales of him simply killing everything in his way to reach his objective. I’m sold.

Saw Pitch Black in the theater and loved it; saw Chronicles of Riddick in the theater and thought it was terrible.

I recently watched the Director’s Cut of Chronicles on Blu-Ray, and was really pulled into it– much better movie. I’m a little disappointed they aren’t picking up right where they left off with the Director’s Cut, judging by the new movie’s plot, but perhaps there is hope from what Diesel is saying.

Really looking forward to the 3rd installment!

Likewise! I’m holding my money up as we chat.

January would be a good sci-fi release month, too.
    Looking forward to Sackhoff. She’s a sci-fi bad-ass dream-babe!

I hope the Necromongers haven’t been forgotten…Dame Vaako has had a lot of time to scheme.
