Despite the fact that Ridley Scott has an almost unfathomable amount of potential film projects in his future, he’s taking the time to produce a project for BBC. Deadline reports the prolific director is behind a 4-hour miniseries based on Philip K. Dick’s Hugo Award winning novel The Man in the High Castle. The story takes place a science fiction alternate history, depicting a world in which the Axis powers, Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany, triumphed over the Allies in the Second World War. Some 20 years after that loss, the United States and much of the world has now been split between Japan and Germany, the major hegemonic states. But the tension between these two powers is mounting, and this stress is playing out in the western U.S.
This won’t be the first time Scott has adapted Dick’s work into a visual medium since one of his best films, Blade Runner, was based on the author’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Dick’s science fiction tales have not only been the most plentiful, but seemingly most successful works to make the jump from page to screen. From Minority Report to Total Recall, the author crafts intricate and thought-provoking stories with riveting social commentary and philosophy riddled throughout. It’ll be interesting to spend four hours in one of his worlds with this miniseries. Sound good?

I love the concept for Man in the High Castle (MiHC), but I didn’t think Philip K. Dick (PKD)’s delivery worked as well as his work in the Transmigration of Timothy Archer, Ubik, Valis, or Flow My Tears… I appreciate that MiHC won the Hugo in 1963, and I love PKD’s work. It does my heart good to see his work hit the silver screen. However, Fatherland by Robert Harris seems like a better candidate (haven’t seen the 1994 film); or perhaps Weihnachtsabend by Keith Roberts would make a better adaptation.
Still, I expect pure gold if Ridley Scott remains involved in any adaptation of PKD.
This definitely sounds like something to see. I read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? A few years ago and loved it (far better than the movie, but mostly because the storytelling was much more involved). I can’t wait for this to be released.
“Sound good?”
It sounds ace to me the novel is brilliant as well, not to mention it’s my 2nd fav Phillip K Dick novel.
Still waiting for “Flow my tears the Policeman said” to be made into a film. I think the Ladd company bought the rights to that book recently (well someone bought the rights anyway)
