‘Rings’ Delayed Yet Again; Pushed Back to February 2017

At some point, Rings will have to be released, right? The film has been delayed multiple times, and it’s been pushed back yet again. Paramount has announced that they’ve moved the horror sequel from its October 28th release date back to February 3, 2017. This marks the third time Rings has shifted on the calendar, and while this year has shown us that horror can succeed at any time of the year, audiences are looking for it in October. Now the only horror film opening next month is Ouija: Origin of Evil.

For those unfamiliar with Rings, the upcoming sequel brings the series into the modern age, following a new doomed woman (Matilda Lutz) who watches the famed video tame (this time via email) and embarks on a journey to discover the secrets behind the tape before her seven days are up.  I’m not exactly sure how significantly different that is than the original movie other than the e-mail angle, but hopefully the filmmakers have found a unique spin on the material that brings Samara into the digital age.

Before the Fall helmer F. Javier Guttierez directed this installment, which also stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Alex Roe, Johnny Galecki, Aimee Teegarden, and Bonnie Morgan.

Rings will have some interesting competition on February 3rd. There’s an untitled horror film from Blumhouse, the drama Same Kind of Different as Me, and T2: Trainspotting.

Here’s the official synopsis for Rings:

A new chapter in the beloved RING horror franchise. A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before…
