Kate Mara Offered Role in Ridley Scott’s THE MARTIAN, What Does This New Film Mean for BLADE RUNNER 2 and PROMETHEUS 2?

by     Posted 12 hours ago

It’s looking fairly concrete that the next Ridley Scott film we’ll be getting is The Martian (after the upcoming Exodus: Gods and Kings of course).  The film will star Matt Damon as an astronaut who is stranded on Mars and must find his way back home. The script was written by the amazing Drew Goddard (based on Andy Weir’s e-book turned Crown novel).  And it could be good, I’m looking forward to seeing Scott work in a somewhat smaller scope.  I mean, it’s a sci-fi movie set on another planet but it looks as though it’s sort of an intimate film in the vein of Cast Away.

Last week we had heard that Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig were in the mix to appear in the film.  I’m not sure if that’s still the case (it’s possible that this movie has a big female cast, though I’m sure someone who has read the book would know better than I), but Kate Mara (House of Cards) has been offered a role in the film.  Ridley Scott and Fox are aiming for a November 25th, 2015 release on this one, so they better get cracking.  Especially since Scott intends to make Blade Runner 2 and Prometheus 2 right afterwards.  Hit the jump for more.

New MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN Trailer Digs Deep Into the Darkness of Life in the Digital Age

Paramount Pictures has released a new Men, Women & Children trailer for director Jason Reitman’s (Up in the Air) excellent new drama.  The film follows the loosely connected stories of a group of teenagers and their parents as they attempt to navigate life in the digital age.  I caught the film at TIFF and found it to be a dark, complex, and emotional snapshot of humanity that also marks another bold step in Reitman’s diverse career.  You can’t say the Juno filmmaker isn’t making ambitious choices, and while some critics found the technology angle in Men, Women & Children to be contrived, I’d argue that the film really isn’t about the dangers of the internet at all—it’s about us.  Adam Sandler is fantastic in the most subdued performance of his career, Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) and Kaitlyn Dever (Short Term 12) absolutely shine as the emotional center of the film, and Breaking Bad star Dean Norris is debatably the highlight of a wonderfully talented ensemble.  I highly recommend seeing the film when it comes to a theater near you.

Felicity Jones Talks THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, Staying True to Real Life, Working with Jonah Hill on TRUE STORY, and More at TIFF 2014

 Felicity-Jones-The-Theory-of-Everything-interview

One of my favorite films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival was director James Marsh’s (Man on Wire) The Theory of Everything.  The fantastic film is an adaptation of the Stephen Hawking memoir Travelling to Infinity, written by his wife Jane Hawking.  Starring Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables) as Hawking, The Theory of Everything chronicles his budding relationship with fellow Cambridge student Jane Wide (Felicity Jones), heartbreaking motor neuron disease diagnosis at the age of 21, and groundbreaking scientific work in the field of time.  Led by phenomenal performances by Redmayne and Jones, The Theory of Everything will definitely be a player in awards season and I strongly recommend seeing it for yourself when it opens November 7th.  For more on the film, watch the trailer.

Shortly after the TIFF premiere I landed an exclusive video interview with Felicity Jones.  She talked her process in preparing for a role, how on set she could tell they were making something special, the way she got involved in the project, how Marsh’s background in documentaries helped everyone stay true to the real story, the May Ball and other U.K. idiosyncrasies, the competition for strong female roles and how TV is more progressive in some ways, what it was like to work with Jonah Hill in True Story, how she’s about to start filming A Monster Calls, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Matthew McConaughey Will Not Be Back for MAGIC MIKE XXL, Movie is “Very Different”

by     Posted 14 hours ago

This isn’t entirely unexpected, but we can put a big R.I.P. on the wishful thoughts that every Magic Mike cast member would be back for Magic Mike XXL.  Despite the global success of director Steven Soderbergh’s original film (the $7 million budget was rewarded with a $167 million worldwide gross), co-star Matthew McConaughey will not be returning.  I’m not too surprised since the sequel is already shooting and we hadn’t heard too much about his involvement.

Magic Mike XXL is being directed by Gregory Jacobs and will be shot by Peter Andrews (aka Steven Soderbergh) and edited by Mary Ann Bernard (aka Steven Soderbergh).  And don’t worry, it still stars Channing Tatum.  Hit the jump for more on Matthew McConaughey not coming back for Magic Mike XXL.

Trailer for Excellent Sports Documentary RED ARMY: Picking up Hockey Sticks and Fighting in the Cold War

Sony Pictures Classics has released the first Red Army trailer online.  Gabe Polsky‘s documentary focuses on the importance of hockey in the Soviet Union and the extreme lengths the communist country went to hold on to its valuable players, who represented a key part of the USSR’s propaganda machine.  I saw the film at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, and it was one of the best movies I saw at the fest.  While I think ESPN’s 30 for 30 is great, I’m glad this movie is going to theaters because it’s a riveting tale with an epic scale when you consider that the USSR considered it a key factor in the Cold War to the point where players were literally soldiers.

halloween-hannibal-giveaway

Damn I wish I was eligible for this giveaway.  NBC’s Hannibal might be the best looking show on network (or cable, for that matter) television.  It’s so well shot, gory and archly funny that Blu-ray is really the only option (don’t forget that even those 1080p iTunes downloads are still compressed).  And Halloween: The Complete Collection captures all of the films in that series, from John Carpenter‘s all-time original on down to Rob Zombie‘s two interpretations.  This also includes a pristine remaster of the long-lost producer’s cut of Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers.  I can’t wait until I can see that cut myself.

The contest opens today.  Hit the jump to see how you can win Hannibal Season 2 or Halloween: The Complete Collection on Blu-ray.  We’ve got three copies of Hannibal and one copy of the Halloween box to unload.

Jennifer Lawrence Goes to War in New THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1 Images

Lionsgate has unveiled a collection of new The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 images from the first half of director Francis Lawrence’s conclusion to the franchise.  As seen in the full-length trailer, the story finds Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss on the frontlines of an all-out war between the rebels of District 13 and the Capitol.  These new images showcase Katniss’ battle-readiness, but the highlight of Mockingay – Part 1 for me continues to be Game of Thrones actress Natalie Dormer’s Cressida.  She looks absolutely badass in the role, and after hearing Dormer’s thoughts on women in the movie industry at the “Women Who Kick Ass” panel at this year’s Comic-Con, I’m essentially ready to vote her into office.

Hit the jump to take a look at the new The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 images.  The film also stars Liam HemsworthWoody HarrelsonJulianne MoorePhilip Seymour HoffmanElizabeth BanksNatalie DormerSam Claflin, and Donald Sutherland.  The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 opens in theaters on November 21st.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 5 Gets a Title and March 13, 2015 Release Date

by     Posted 17 hours ago

paranormal-activity-5-release-date-2015

The Paranormal Activity 5 release date has been pushed yet again, but Paramount has also given a title to the found footage sequel, which likely signals this release date will (hopefully) stick.  The follow-up will be titled Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and will now open in theaters on March 13, 2015 instead of October 25th of this year (which didn’t seem likely to happen anyway).  The pic will square off at the box office against Disney’s live-action Cinderella and Ron Howard’s sea-set drama In the Heart of the Sea with Chris Hemsworth.  This latest chapter in the supernatural franchise marks the directorial debut of Gregory Plotkin, who produced the last three installments in the series.

This is the next proper sequel after Paramount went the spinoff route earlier this year with Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.  As always, plot details are non-existent, but given the Blumhouse Productions model, it’s possible the film’s story is still in flux—Blumhouse movies are prone to significant reshoots not unlike the Pixar approach.  More after the jump.

FORCE MAJEURE Trailer: How Would You React in the Face of a Devastating Avalanche?

by     Posted 18 hours ago

force-majeure-trailer

Magnolia Pictures has released the first Force Majeure trailer for writer/director Ruben Östlund’s wickedly funny new film, which was one of my favorites of the Toronto International Film Festival (read my review here).  The story revolves around a family vacationing in the Alps who are thrown into flux when, as a seemingly devastating avalanche heads their way during lunch, the father Tomas (Johannes Kuhnke) grabs his phone and runs away instead of trying to protect his family.  When the avalanche turns out to be nothing more than a dusting and everyone comes out fine, Tomas and his wife Ebba’s (Lisa Loven Kongsli) relationship begins to unravel.  I caught the film at TIFF and found it to be positively delightful.  It’s at turns sharply hilarious and devastatingly sad, and I imagine it will be a serious contender in the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar race.

Watch the first Force Majeure trailer after the jump.  The film also stars Kristofer Hivju, Fanni Metelius, and Brady CorbetForce Majeure opens in theaters on October 24th.

Matthew McConaughey Looks to the Stars in Another INTERSTELLAR Poster, While Brad Pitt Is Bruised in New FURY Poster

by     Posted 18 hours ago

interstellar-poster-fury-poster

New posters for two of the most anticipated films of the year have arrived online.  Hot on the heels of yesterday’s icy one sheet, another new Interstellar poster grounds Matthew McConaughey on Earth in director Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi film.  It pairs nicely with yesterday’s space-set poster, and also focuses on what looks to be the emotional hook of the story: a father-daughter relationship.  I’m more than sold on this movie already, so now I’m just counting down the days until the pic’s November 7th release in both traditional theaters and IMAX.

We’ve also got a brand new poster for director David Ayer’s original World War II drama Fury.  The story revolves around a tank crew in the final days of the war, as they battle a desperate German army.  This new poster puts Brad Pitt front and center as the tank’s leader Wardaddy, while also providing a snapshot of the tank crew in its entirety.  It’s tad over-photoshopped, but the film remains one of my must-sees of the fall.  Fury also stars Logan Lerman, Shia LaBeouf, Michael Pena, and Jon Bernthal and opens on October 17th.  Hit the jump to check out both posters.

THE GUEST Alternate Trailer Shows Exactly Why the Film is Badass

by     Posted 18 hours ago

the-guest-alternate-trailer

One of the things you may not know about The Guest is that it has some serious swagger.  Some of that vibe may be influenced by movies like Drive, but The Guest has much stronger characters and more humor than that film.  It’s funny, full of action, smart, and extremely stylish.  This new trailer, cut together by V/H/S/2 and Hobo With a Shotgun director Jason Eisener, perfectly demonstrates all of that.  It would be nice if a vehicle this substantive could be the thing that catapults Dan Stevens to domestic stardom, so I’m hoping audiences flock in droves to this new film from Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett.

Hit the jump to check out The Guest alternate trailer (and be sure to read Matt’s review along with my interview with Wingard and Barrett).  The film also stars Maika MonroeLeland OrserSheila KelleyBrendan Meyer, and Lance Reddick.  The Guest opens in U.S. theaters today, September 17th.  If you’re in one of the cities in which its playing, go ASAP.  If not, go next week.

Exclusive Clip from THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE 40th Anniversary Blu-ray Goes Behind the Famous Hook Scene

by     Posted 18 hours ago

texas-chain-saw-massacre-exclusive-clip

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of the most formative films from my childhood.  I of course didn’t get to see it until I was in my early teens, but the box was always taunting me from the shelf of my local Blockbuster, “I dare you to watch this.”  Once I watched, I wasn’t disappointed.  And the film still holds up wonderfully today.  When you break it down it’s actually far less gory than its title implies, but it’s shot in such a visceral manner that you think you’re seeing things you actually aren’t. Even if director Tobe Hooper never made another film (and he’s made several great ones since), his mark on cinema history would have been complete.

Dark Sky Films has done a truly stunning job on the 4K restoration of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for its 40th Anniversary Release.  Their Blu-ray also has a bevy of bonus features, including a through making-of documentary.  The clip we’re sharing with you today comes from that doc and explores the famous meat-hook scene.  Hit the jump to check it out.

Paul Greengrass Could Direct Leonardo DiCaprio/Jonah Hill Project Before BOURNE 5; LEGACY Sequel Still Moving Forward

by     Posted 18 hours ago

A bombshell was dropped a couple of days ago when news broke that Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass are currently in discussions to return to the Bourne franchise, with Greengrass also penning the screenplay.  The prospect of the duo responsible for the brilliant The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum coming back to the series was an exciting one, but it raised a lot of questions about Universal’s other Bourne franchise.  When Damon and Greengrass departed the Bourne series, Universal kept the property alive with The Bourne Legacy, which saw Jeremy Renner playing another agent living and working in the same universe as Bourne.  The film did so-so at the box office, but Universal was happy enough that it began developing a sequel with director Justin Lin to hit theaters in 2016.

When we learned that Greengrass and Damon were talking about returning to the Bourne series, we heard that Universal was also hoping to make that film before the Legacy sequel, taking over the Renner-fronted film’s 2016 release date.  Now some clarity has materialized with regards to the situation, as Greegrass could instead shoot an entirely different movie before Bourne.  More after the jump.
