We haven’t heard that much on the Haunted Mansion front from Guillermo del Toro recently, with our last update on the matter being over a year or so ago.  Del Toro likes to keep a lot of irons in the fire though (I don’t blame him) and he recently indicated that the Disney ride adaptation he plans to produce and co-write (and possibly even direct) isn’t quite dead.  He’s still plugging along at it.

If you haven’t caught up with the other del Toro projects in the works, you can check out Steve’s interview with him earlier this week that covered stuff like the Pacific Rim Animated Series At the Mountains of Madness, Crimson Peak and The Strain along with his new Black and White movie.   Hit the jump for del Toro’s Haunted Mansion update.

Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes easily claimed the top spot in its debut weekend, leaving its competition in the dust.  While the Apes sequel will likely end the weekend with a mid-$70 million haul, the closest contender was Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, which brought in $16.5 million.  While the weekend performance for Optimus Prime and Co. wasn’t all that impressive, the movie did cross the $200 million domestic watermark, as well as three-quarters of a billion dollars at the global box office.  Let that sink in for a second before you check out the rest of the weekend’s top flicks.

Here are how the top ten stand:

 Title Weekend  Total
1.  Dawn of the Planet of the Apes $73,000,000  $73.0
2.  Transformers: Age of Extinction $16,500,000  $209.0
3.  Tammy $12,910,000  $57.4
4.  22 Jump Street $6,700,000  $172.0
5.  How to Train Your Dragon 2 $5,865,000  $152.1
6.  Earth to Echo $5,500,000  $24.6
7.  Deliver Us from Evil $4,700,000  $25.0
8.  Maleficent $4,169,000  $222.0
9.  Begin Again $2,935,000  $5.9
10.  Jersey Boys $2,510,000  $41.7

Carlton Cuse and Guillermo del Toro Talk THE STRAIN, Creature Design, Casting, a Maximum 5 Season Run and More

by     Posted 3 hours ago

the-strain-cory-stoll

From filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and showrunner Carlton Cuse, The Strain tells the story of an epic battle for survival between man and vampire.  When Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control in New York City, and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak that is eerily similar to an ancient and evil strain of vampirism, they quickly realize that they are waging war for the fate of humanity itself.  The show also stars David Bradley, Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Miguel Gomez, Natalie Brown and Jack Kesy.

During this recent interview to discuss the show’s premieres, Carlton Cuse and Guillermo del Toro talked about collaborating together, that this is the unadulterated version of the show that they wanted to make, that they basically follow the narrative of the first book in the first season, that they don’t see the series going beyond five seasons, creating the look of the creatures, and how the casting came together.  Check out what they said after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

While at the Starz portion of the TCA Press Tour, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht took some time to talk about new and returning programming.  During the interview, he spoke about the new showrunner for Season 3 of Da Vinci’s Demons, that he’s optimistic about a third season of Black Sails, what viewers can expect from the BBC co-production The Missing, airing in the fall, how the first season of Outlander will be split into two parts, with the first half premiering on August 9th and the second half in early 2015, that if audiences get behind the show, they’ll continue the journey, why he decided to go ahead with American Gods as a series, after HBO decided not to move forward, and how he offered Universal three years, if they’d do Fifty Shades of Grey as a TV series, but they declined. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Frank Grillo Talks THE PURGE: ANARCHY, Zen via Boxing, What Scares Him, His Goofy Side, DirecTV’s KINGDOM and More

frank-grillo-the-purge-anarchy-interview

In The Purge: Anarchy, Frank Grillo plays Leo, a guy who deliberately heads out after The Purge siren blares seeking vengeance.  However, instead of hunting down his own target, he winds up trying to rescue other helpless Purge victims.  You know who I’d want to help me survive the night if The Purge became a real thing?  Grillo himself.  Not only does the guy absolutely kill it in combat heavy films like The Grey and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but he also trains extensively in real life, too.  Perhaps his aversion to guns wouldn’t serve him well in The Purge, but if life imitates art, hand-to-hand combat certainly wouldn’t be an issue.

While attending The Purge: Breakout at the tour’s Coney Island stop, we got the chance to talk to Grillo about the intensity of his performance in the sequel, his one big fear in life and his hope to finally make something a little more family friendly that his kids can watch.  Catch all of that in our video interview after the jump and, in case you missed it, click here to hear about all of Grillo’s upcoming projects including The Raid 2, bringing back Brock Rumlow and more.

TOP 5: DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Set Visit, GONE GIRL Trailer, BOYHOOD, EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS Trailer

New to Blu-ray this week is the fascinating documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune. I caught the film earlier today and have no reservation calling it a must-see for sci-fi fans. Seeing Alejandro Jodorowsky passionately recant the events that led to his convincing the likes of Orson Welles and Salvador Dalí to join the pic is a joy in its own right, but illustrating the impact his unmade movie had on future science-fiction films is one of the doc’s greatest achievements. The level of imagination, creativity, detail, and ambition that Jodorowsky and his visionary team put into their adaptation of Frank Herbert‘s seminal sci-fi novel is staggering and a bit awe-inspiring when you consider its influence on future entries such as Star Wars, Alien, The Terminator, and more. Ahead of its time doesn’t even begin to describe it. For better or worse, I’m not sure that the world is prepared for the madness that is Jodorowsky’s film even today.

My Jodorowky’s Dune endorsement aside, this week’s Top 5 features interviews for and Matt’s review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Steve’s visit to the set of Guardians of the Galaxy, a new trailer for David Fincher‘s Gone GirlBoyhood interviews and Matt’s review, and the first trailer for Ridley Scott‘s biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

Last, but certainly not least, in our character profiles for Marvel’s new film Guardians of the Galaxy, we look into the life and times of Rocket Raccoon.  Voiced by Bradley Cooper, Rocket is by far the strangest of the Guardians you’ll be seeing on screen, and that’s saying something when one of his teammates is a walking, talking tree.  This diminutive anthropomorphic gunslinger packs the most artillery of group, carrying guns that you would think would be difficult for a normal person to wield, let alone a raccoon.  Hit the jump for more info on what’s sure to be the breakout character of the film.

Eric Bana Talks DELIVER US FROM EVIL, the Origins of the Script, Exorcism Movies, Why He Can’t do a TV Series in America, and More

Now in theaters, is Deliver Us From Evil, a supernatural crime thriller that writer/director Scott Derrickson describes, “Serpico meets The Exorcist.”  While this may seem like the most unlikely pairing since Abbot and Costello first encountered The Wolfman, it’s actually a pretty good assessment of the film’s tone and style.  The Jerry Bruckheimer production tells the very-loosely-based-on-fact story of Ralph Sarchie, (Eric Bana) a hardboiled Police Sargent from the Bronx who, – with the help of a knife-wielding partner (Joel McHale) and the guidance of a Priest (Edgar Ramirez) carrying a dark past of his own – slowly discovers that the perp in his latest murder investigation just might be Satan himself.  As the walls close in and the bodies pile up, Sarchie and his cohorts race against time to find the culprit and protect his own family (Oliver Munn).

Recently, Collider sat down with Eric Bana to discuss his role as Sarchie.  During the conversation, he talked about what made this script stand out from other exorcism-centric films, the origins of the script, finding himself in a literal lion’s den, why he can’t do a TV series in America, and more.  Hit the jump to watch the full interview, and be sure to check out our previous Deliver Us from Evil interviews with Derrickson, Bruckheimer, Munn, McHale, and Ramirez.

Friday Box Office: DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Rises above the Competition

by     Posted Yesterday

dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-box-office

The Apes rule Friday’s box office as Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes dominates the competition.  That being said, its Friday debut is nowhere near that of this week’s second place film’s opening total; Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, pulled in over $41 million in its debut just a couple of weeks ago.  These numbers appear to be par for the course of 2014′s summer box office, which has been under-performing compared to recent years.  With praise raining down on Dawn from critics and fans alike, it’s possible that positive word of mouth could help keep it atop the box office for the rest of the month.  Hit the jump for more on its chances, as well as the rest of Friday’s box office report.

Patricia Arquette Talks BOYHOOD, Why the Film Was a Top Priority for Her, What Was Cut in the Editing Room, CSI: CYBER, and More

From writer/director Richard Linklater, the indie drama Boyhood is a very unique and special project, in that it was filmed over 12 years with the same cast.  As you watch Mason (Ellar Coltrane) grow up, from age 6 to age 18, you will see him navigate all aspects of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations, and all of the moments in between.  The film also stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, as Mason’s parents, and Lorelei Linklater, as his sister Samantha.

At the film’s press day, actress Patricia Arquette spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about the enormity of this project, why this film was such a huge priority for her, over the years, how powerful and moving it was to see the final film put together, how exciting it was to follow this character through so many ups and downs, that there were only tiny bits and pieces that got cut, and why the love of this family was so important to her.  She also talked about what drew her to her next project, as the lead on the new CBS television spin-off, CSI: Cyber.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.

MTV’s SHANNARA Series Gets 10-Episode Order and Moves Forward with Jonathan Liebesman Directing and Acting as Executive Producer

When last we spoke of the planned television adaptation of Terry Brooks’ fantasy series Shannara, it was headed to MTV with Jon Favreau directing.  The good news is that the network has decided to go ahead with the series and has placed a 10-episode order.  The not-so-great news is that Favreau will no longer be directing due to scheduling issues, though he’ll retain his executive producer credit.  Word has it that Jonathan Liebesman, the director of the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, will be directing the first two episodes of the series and will act as executive producer.  Hit the jump for much more on this ambitious adaptation.

Stan Lee Confirms AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Cameo, Offers Advice for BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

These days, comics legend Stan Lee might be known more for his Marvel movie cameos than his creation of the self-same heroes seen in the flesh on the big screen.  With the latest news that Lee just wrapped his cameo in Joss Whedon’s upcoming sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron, that status isn’t likely to change.  This past year has been relatively slow for Lee’s acting career, especially since the previous 13 years saw him cameo in 17 different movies.  And with Lee’s 92nd birthday coming up at the end of this year, he shows little sign of slowing down.  He even reached across the comic book aisle to offer up some advice to Zack Snyder’s DC superhero film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  Hit the jump for that and more.
