First Trailer and Poster for RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

     April 14, 2011

Fox has released the first trailer for Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  I’m a bit disappointed by the take I’m seeing it but I’ll admit that an Apes movie is an incredibly tough sell.  The movie looks far more action-oriented and I was hoping for a moral story involving James Franco’s character and the main ape Caesar (played by Andy Serkis using motion capture)  that seems only hinted at in this teaser.  Finally, I don’t think people really care where their special effects come from and while I know that WETA is a fine effects company, people didn’t walk away from Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes remake thinking “Wow!  ILM really did a bang-up job with those effects!”  I know people respond to action, but having an ape towering over your bed and watching you sleep just looks silly.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  The film also stars, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, and Tom Felton.  Rise of the Planet of the Apes opens August 5th.

I’m not gonna lie, the movie looks pretty good. I’m not a James Franco fan at all but this movie has some potential. I have to say though that changing the name from ‘Rise of the apes’ to ‘Rise of the planet of the apes’ was an incredibly stupid decision.

the same filling here in both of your comments, James is a good actor but seeing him in this trailer just………….. i dont know it docent look la he can be part of this equation….

  • kure

well i will tell you the good news matt.beside ceasar attacking some guy, there isnt much action until last 30 minutes.then apes escape from all the facilities and zoos.then its action all around

  • giovanni

I agree and disagree with you on some points. Avatar was one of the most successfull films of all time due in large part to its groundbreaking special effects that everyone had been hearing about for at least a year before its release. So if by mentioning that this is the same team that brought you Avatar, even if it brings a quarter of revenue that film brought in im sure the studio would be happy so its not a bad angle to take. I agree im unhappy about all the action i was hoping for more of a moral story that they were hinting at during press releases but at the same time that shot with The Ape watching them sleep is exactly that. Not very significant action wise like you mentioned but very creepy since the ape is obviously observing them with intentions beyond the intrlligence of an average ape, which is pretty scary. To have creatures with that size & strength coupled with intelligence is a very scary concept. Which i am hopeful the film can touches on that, noo need for all the destruction :)

By the way ILM did an amazing job with their first full animated feature Rango, that film was absolutely gorgeous

  • CharlesX

I thought I was rewatching X-Men: The Last Stand’s trailer…..the line on “we have a cure” and the sequence at the Golden Gate Bridge looked soooo familiar. We are just missing Magneto here.

  • mrbatmatt

The plot sounds fine, everything else looks silly. Honestly switch out the apes for robots and you have T3. That’s not a good thing folks. The gorilla hopping off the bridge at the helicopter was the funniest thing I’ve seen since the Fast 5 trailer.

  • Venusian

Why are you guys going on about ‘all the action’ ? You haven’t seen the movie.

  • C

I liked it! (Everything except the helicopter gag.) The ape watching sleeping humans, and the ape bolting down a suburban street were true to tone of the Pierre Boulle novel which was all about the inversion of human values – creepy and perverse and witty.

    • NANA

      You Right!

  • Alex–

Woman and super smart ape sex, there I said it.

  • Stacey Titmuss

Andy Serkis is partly Armenian. A lot of people don’t know that.

Some other Armenian icons and legends include Andre Agassi, Charles Aznavour, Eric Bogosian, Cher, Princess Diana (1/64 Armenian), Atom Egoyan, Arshile Gorky, The Kardashians, Dr. Jack Kevorkian, Kirk Kerkorian, Mike Connors, William Saroyan, Seymour Skinner (Armen Tamzarian), System of a Down, Steven Zaillian, Michael Vartan, Gregory Peck, Dita Von Teese, Ken Davitian, David Hedison, David Dickinson, Simon Abkarian.

    • boot

      wow, no one cares

  • Vince

This is my 100% honest opinion.

That trailer is one of the most unintentionally hilarious movie trailers I have ever seen.

I laughed so hard when I saw the ape staring at the couple in the bedroom, and laughed even HARDER when I saw all of the bare-assed apes wreaking havoc on the Golden Gate Bridge.

If this movie is half as retarded as it looks, I’m in. I’m so interested in this movie now. Ironically, of course.

  • Lob Taylor

Am cautiously optimistic about this movie! effects look damn good. A bit ham-fisted with the emotional undertone though.

  • Excpired

The apes look stupid IMO, I liked them more in Tim Burton’s than in this; the ones in this just look fake and cheesy.

As far as I can tell there isn’t anyone behind the ape, it just looks like an animated ape.

  • Shines4

This movie looks dumber than the original one. Hey Hollywood writers can you come up with something original these days or are we going to remake every movie.

i don’t think the movie looks terrible, but it’s completely unreasonable. we have guns, thousands of years of technology, and complex societies. how are a bunch of unarmed apes going to take over the world. planet of the apes was always one of those “what if” scenarios…the important part being the future and not how we got there. i don’t understand why this movie is being made.

    • parapooper

Exactly, if I understand this trailer correctly a few dozen lab apes are going to manufacture enough of this drug and administer it to the other 350 000 apes spread over some of the least accessible terrain the planet and then enslave the human population which outnumbers them 20,000 to 1. Good luck with that, apes.

  • Valaraukar

Why is everyone camparing this movie to the Tim Burton one??? ill say it has more in common whit the original series than TB flick.

  • SPS

Looks pretty good, love the ape design, but other effects need more completion. And isn’t Freida Pinto one of the most beautiful young actresses ever??? Love her.

This is sooooo lame. It plays like a Conan Obrian skit.
I mean could you have ask for more of a cliched story?
Besides, the Apes in the original were already smart and talking and had well organized colonies.
This is nothing but big pharma doing morally questionable science, a brilliant young scientist pushing the boundaries, his hot, little fuck side piece girlfriend who also plays his sidekick and the one that carries the moral compass because Franco’s scientist can’t be bothered because he has to progress the story forward until the end wherein he starts to see the errors of his ways and goes from being some Cornell University grad to a goddamn action hero.
And how can this shit not be complete without the requisite corporate clean up man(the brother in the expensive J Crew Ludlow suit) that has to eventually round up the crazies, with his KILLZONE POSSE, and save big pharma’s investment.
Lastly, one ape will get away so expect a sequel.
    Kiss my ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • V1z1R

Looks interesting. But I think Weta needs to improve their CGI. There’s some kind of noticable graphic touch in it. Maybe it’s the textures or the colors. Still better than King Kong’ CGI or even LOTR.
Let’s hope that they’ll make some corrections after this trailer like Fox did for Avatar.

  • stylus59

For me this looks either as a Shyamalan sci fi epic or as a funny satire on big budget films.

This movie looks retarded. How would apes take over the planet? We have a military with tanks, fighter jets, and trained soldiers with guns. Apes have sticks and stones. Last time I checked, a rifle has a bit more reach than a spear or stones… Oh no the apes are taking over San Francisco! Mobilize the military, kill all the apes, end of movie.
