A little over a year ago we brought you the news that bootstrapped comic book writer/artist Rob Liefeld would be seeing his "Extreme Universe" creation turned into a feature film franchise. And it was about a year before that that Liefeld's co-creation Deadpool surprised everyone with a massive, fan-favorite performance at the box office. That success led to a shared cinematic universe deal totaling nine comic book titles, over 100 characters, and who knows how many possible feature adaptations. Now, we know who the major player in the distribution/production of those films will be: Netflix.

Deadline reports that the previous deal with Graham King and Fundamental Films didn't work out, but Netflix swooped in with a reported seven-figure deal for six comic titles--Brigade, Bloodstrike, Cybrid, Re-Gex, Bloodwulf, and Kaboom--and roughly 50 characters. Akiva Goldsman is still part of the deal and will set up the writers room--a "high-end writers' room", whatever that means--for a shared cinematic universe. Oh and you can totally expect an R-rated approach to these stories.

Goldsman's work up to this point isn't a strong selling point for yours truly; I'll be waiting for much more than a few names in headlines to make the final call. Goldsman and Liefeld's deal comes after their work to develop Avengelyne for Paramount way back when Gina Carano was still attached. Netflix is still getting their legs under them when it comes to original features. Bright was an unmitigated disaster of a film, but it's popular enough (and Netflix has deep enough pockets) to warrant a sequel, at least. Even if Liefeld's adaptations are just as poorly received by critics, these movies could keep being churned out for the foreseeable future.

Here's what the streaming giant's feature film head honcho Scott Stuber had to say about the deal:

“Rob Liefeld’s Extreme Universe features gritty stories and distinctive characters. Akiva’s creative voice has been behind some of the largest movie franchises, making him uniquely capable of halping [sic] bring these superheroes from the Extreme Universe to life for Netflix.”

Goldsman weighed in as well:

"Rob is a unique and innovative talent who knows how to combine hard-edged comic book action with real emotionality. Netflix has the ambition, reach, and dedication to bring his universe to life.”

And, of course, Liefeld had some thoughts about the new deal:

“Netflix has become a part of every day existence for me and my children. Their programming is the most dynamic and diverse I have seen. I am beyond thrilled and inspired to be bringing my Extreme catalogue to life with the creative wizards at Netflix. What Akiva Goldsman has achieved with his craft and storytelling across all mediums in our industray [sic] is of absolute benefit for my Extreme characters. He is an absolute comic book fanatic and working with him on adapting Extreme Universe has been electric. His stellar work on Star Trek Discovery has wowed the fandom and trust me when I say that the Teen Titans show he is producing is going to blow fans away. I cannot wait to show the world what we have in store.”
