With the film not set to open until May 3rd, 2013, Robert Downey Jr. is going to have a hard time talking about anything other than Iron Man 3 (or The Avengers) for the foreseeable future. With most of his work on set of The Avengers completed, the actor took some time to briefly discuss his approach towards Iron Man 3 saying:
“My sense of it is that we need to leave it all on the field — whatever that means in the end. You can pick several different points of departure for that.”
While nothing here can be considered a groundbreaking revelation regarding the project, you can hit the jump for more on what Downey Jr. had to say about Iron Man and reuniting with co-writer/director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).
The interview comes courtesy of Hero Complex who caught up with Downey Jr. at his office in Venice last week. During the conversation, the actor talked about re-teaming with Shane Black on Iron Man 3 saying:
“He’s more than the sum of his parts and he’s also kind of been a sleeper for a long time,” Downey said. “We’re not talking much about [the script] right now because Shane is off writing and we talked before that and when we are talking again the talking is going to be over pretty quick [because we’re on the same page].”
If there was ever any doubt regarding Downey Jr.’s interest in the project following the departure of Jon Favreau, he put it to rest by assuring audiences that:
”Bringing in Shane Black to write and direct ‘Iron Man 3′ to me is basically the only transition from Favreau to a ‘next thing’ that Favreau and the audience and Marvel and I could ever actually sign off on.”
While we don’t know a ton about Iron Man 3, Black mentioned back in March that Marvel was not happy with the direction of Iron Man 2 (that makes two of us) and that the third installment would feature Iron Man fighting “real world villains” while describing its approach as being less actioner and more “Tom Clancy-thriller.” Of course, only time will tell how the film actually comes together. For now, I’m going to trust that Black has things all figured out while anxiously awaiting more details.
Downey Jr. can next be seen making a turn as Iron Man/Tony Stark in The Avengers which hits theaters next summer on May 4th.
