With the film not set to open until May 3rd, 2013, Robert Downey Jr. is going to have a hard time talking about anything other than Iron Man 3 (or The Avengers) for the foreseeable future. With most of his work on set of The Avengers completed, the actor took some time to briefly discuss his approach towards Iron Man 3 saying:

“My sense of it is that we need to leave it all on the field — whatever that means in the end. You can pick several different points of departure for that.”

While nothing here can be considered a groundbreaking revelation regarding the project, you can hit the jump for more on what Downey Jr. had to say about Iron Man and reuniting with co-writer/director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).

Robert Downey Jr with Iron Man 2 toys at Toy Fair 2010 The interview comes courtesy of Hero Complex who caught up with Downey Jr. at his office in Venice last week. During the conversation, the actor talked about re-teaming with Shane Black on Iron Man 3 saying:

“He’s more than the sum of his parts and he’s also kind of been a sleeper for a long time,” Downey said. “We’re not talking much about [the script] right now because Shane is off writing  and we talked before that and when we are talking again the talking is going to be over pretty quick [because we're on the same page].”

If there was ever any doubt regarding Downey Jr.’s interest in the project following the departure of Jon Favreau, he put it to rest by assuring audiences that:

”Bringing in Shane Black to write and direct ‘Iron Man 3′ to me is basically the only transition from Favreau to a ‘next thing’ that Favreau and the audience and Marvel and I could ever actually sign off on.”

While we don’t know a ton about Iron Man 3, Black mentioned back in March that Marvel was not happy with the direction of Iron Man 2 (that makes two of us) and that the third installment would feature Iron Man fighting “real world villains” while describing its approach as being less actioner and more “Tom Clancy-thriller.” Of course, only time will tell how the film actually comes together. For now, I’m going to trust that Black has things all figured out while anxiously awaiting more details.

Downey Jr. can next be seen making a turn as Iron Man/Tony Stark in The Avengers which hits theaters next summer on May 4th.

  1. Quite possibly this guys last Iron Man film. Whether he’ll be in possible Avengers sequels is still to be determined.

    • I seem to remember reading that he was signed on for 9 films with Marvel (IronMan and Avengers). Same as Sam Jackson.

      • I’m not 100% sure but I believe he’s only signed on for 4 pictures in total so once IM3 hits in 2013 its a very good chance he decides to just move on and do other things. Only for sure way I see him returning is if they paid him Depp money but they’re not gonna do that.

I believe Sam Jackson is the only person that has a 9 picture deal everyone else is no more than 6 at best, that makes sense since Jackson basically only has cameos in the movies so far.

  2. I really hope they finally do the Devil in the Bottle in this movie. RDJ wants Pepper and Happy to get together, so Stark getting smashed could fit right in there.

  3. They already did Stark drunk as Iron Man in IM2. They chickened out (alternate opening to that film) from really driving that aspect home. Actually, I liked the promise of having Stark addicted to being IM which is causing his body to fail. Could have gone places with that idea, but they squandered it.

However, the opportunity for Demon in the Bottle is passed. We already Tony drunk as IM. To do it again would just be repetitive.

I’m a little worried with the “real world villains” idea, since all the villains have been grounded (in terms of the film universe) in reality. They’ve all been tech-based. If anything, I’d like to see the IM films open up the possibilities of super-powered characters that aren’t tech-based. A tech-based superhero shouldn’t face only tech-based villains. Just as mutants shouldn’t only fight mutants. Broadening the type of villains each faces expands the universe.

What Marvel really needs to concentrate on is creating a central, throughline story that links their hero to the villain. And give each of their action sequences a lifespan and pulse of its own. Their action scenes have all been lackluster.

    • IM 2 really squandered so many opportunities. there were many promising opportunities for character development that were just avoided.

  4. Wasn’t MARVEL the reason behind IM2 failure. Favereau had only wanted a film revolving around Rourkes revenge on Downey, however Marvel as always put greed ahead of product and strong armed the lame Jackson/Johansen Avengers storyline to the forefront. This is the same problem that plagued Spiderman 3. Everything that IronMan wasn’t, which is everything that made it a success was due to Marvels limited involvement. Hence why every film since then has been horrendous.

  5. 1) More War Machine (seriously, best scene in IM2 was their teamup)
    2) No more villains just ripping off Stark tech.
    3) Less cheese.

  6. Downey lacks imagination as an actor he just can’t take the character to the next level. I doubt he lacks power to influence the script or director.

  7. It would be good if in the next Iron Man film they include Bethany Cabe, Force, Rumiko Fujikawa, Guardsman, Maria Hill and Iron Man 2020.

I hope to see the following villains in future Iron Man sequels:
Arsenal, Beetle (Abner Jenkins), Blizzard (Donnie Gill), Cobalt Man, Controller, Dreadknight, Edwin Cord, Ezekiel Stane, Fin Fang Foom, Firebrand, Firepower, Ghost, Grey Gargoyle, Hypnotia, Justine Hammer, Iron Patriot, Kearson DeWitt, Killer Shrike, Living Laser, Madame Masque, Mandarin, Mauler, Melter, MODOK, Morgan Stark/Gregory Stark, Raiders, Spymaster, Sunset Bain, Sunturion, Temugin, Titanium Man, Unicorn, Ultimo, Wong-Chu.

  8. Why would they talk about the script? Disney owns Marvel and as we have recently found out Disney says script or story doesn’t matter.

  9. @LEM

Actually, one of Disney’s top tech guys simply told some computer specialists that he believed spectacle (e.g. visual effects) was more important than story, when it comes to tickets sales. He did this at a computer graphics conference, no less. Nobody at Disney is saying that story doesn’t matter.

  10. What made Iron Man 1 a hit was the conjunction of three factors:

    - An excellent script.
    - A brilliant casting ( RDJ + the Dude = explosive cocktail)
    - Great CGI without being overwhelming.

If they can respect those 3 conditions, then Iron Man3 will be a hit.

Don’t mess with Iron Man please, like you did with Spider Man, they are my most beloved superheroes. ^^

Wish that Daredevil will deserve a descent reboot, ’cause Ben Affleck has deadly messed with it.

  11. I hope Robert Downey Jr. reprise his role as Tony Stark maybe for The Avengers sequels.

I think the role of Iron Man reinvent Downey Jr.’s career so if he reprise his role for The Avengers sequels, it would be great for the fans.
