Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to play the lead male role in Alfonso Cuaron’s upcoming sci-fi film Gravity. Let that greatness sink in for a moment and then we’ll continue. According to Deadline, “Downey will play the leader of a team posted at a remote space station. While he and a female colleague are traveling outside the space station, the other team members are decimated by debris from an exploded satellite.” Jolie was in talks to play the female role but when she opted not to, Universal dropped the project. Warner Bros. has now picked it up and Downey’s starpower should help boost the studios confidence in moving the film forward.
Downey wanted to work with Cuaron since Downey can appreciate how the Mexican director created two of the best films of the 2000s with Y Tu Mama Tambien and Children of Men. Gravity, which Cuaron co-wrote with his son Jonas, will be the director’s first feature film since Children of Men. The film is set to shoot in London this summer and wrap in time for Downey to shoot Sherlock Holmes 2-which is also filming in London-this fall.
