Robert Downey Jr. continues to be one of the most in-demand actors working today.  Just yesterday, we reported the news that Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will be Blood) is hoping to cast Downey in his upcoming adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel Inherent Vice.  Now, we have news that Warner Bros is developing an untitled musical comedy for Downey to star in.  The film will focus on two Broadway songwriters having to take jobs as counselors at a theater camp after their latest musical flops.  Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, who previously won the Pulitizer and three Tony awards for their rock opera Next to Normal, will be writing and developing the music for the film.  You can hit the jump to find out what other projects Robert Downey Jr. has coming up.

Robert Downey Jr. wanting to star in a musical makes sense.  As Deadline reminds us, Downey is a talented singer who even released an album titled The Futurist in 2004.  Fans of Downey might also recall that he has sung in a few of his past films such as Chaplin, The Singing Detective, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Where this untitled musical comedy will fall in Downey’s extremely busy schedule is unknown.  The actor is currently finishing up working on the sequel to Sherlock Holmes.  After that, he is set to don his Iron Man suit once again for Joss Whedon’s The Avengers in February.   He’s also currently attached to Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful, but we still have yet to find out if he will really star in the film or not.

Downey was also set to star in Alfonso Cuaron’s ambitious upcoming sci-fi film, Gravity, but recently had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.  Downey is also currently developing a film based on Neil Strauss’ non-fiction book Emergency! This Book Will Save Your Life and a film based on a 9-year old boy’s advice on how to deal with women with How to Talk to Girls.  Downey is also still set to star in Iron Man 3, but it’s safe to assume that is still a few years away from filming.

I’ve been a huge fan of Downey for years now, and I still can’t believe that he is one of the most popular actors right now.  I spent years hoping that he would one day breakthrough and became an A-lister, and I’m never annoyed to read that he is set to star in yet another film.  I will say that out of all of these projects, the possible collaboration between Downey and Paul Thomas Anderson excites me the most.  I’m also sure that Raimi and Downey will make an excellent team for Oz if Downey decides to star in the film.
