Fans of Lee Child's novel One Shot may be unhappy with Tom Cruise being cast as Jack Reacher in Christopher McQuarrie's adaptation, but it's getting tough to complain about the supporting cast.  Last week we reported that Richard Jenkins had joined the cast and now Variety is reporting that Oscar-winner Robert Duvall has come on board.  Variety has no details on his character beyond saying that Dvuall has a small but pivotal role which is significant to Reacher's investigation into a sniper accused of murdering five people.Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.  The film also stars Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo.  One Shot is due out February 8, 2013.  As for Duvall, he recently wrapped shooting on Billy Bob Thornton's Jayne Mansfield's Car and the indie thriller Mississippi Wild, which stars Dakota Fanning and Ryan Donowho. Here's the synopsis for Lee Child's One Shot:

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.

And sure enough, ex—military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter–a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right–and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning–and then beat him shot for shot. [Amazon]
