AMC is on a roll. “Mad Men” has won the Emmy for Best Drama two years running and “Breaking Bad” is no slouch either. Now the network is trying yet another original idea: a zombie drama series based on the “The Walking Dead” comic series. Better yet, Frank Darabont (“Shawshank Redemption,” “The Green Mile,” “The Mist”) is helming it. Series creator Robert Kirkman discusses the new venture after the jump.
MTV sat down with Kirkman, who seems very excited about the TV deal. When asked about working with Darabont, he had only positive things to say.
When I heard that Darabont was interested in doing it a long, long time ago, I was just ecstatic. For me, “The Walking Dead” is not necessarily a horror thing. It’s not all about the shocks. It’s about characters and all of that dramatic nonsense. And Darabont does that better than anybody. If you’ve seen “The Shawshank Redemption” or “The Mist,” you know he gets to the heart of the characters and shows them dealing with extremes. It’s a match made in heaven.
Being on AMC, there are a lot more restrictions than a network like HBO or Showtime, which thrive on controversial content. Kirkman isn’t worried about there being too little violence.
I had no concerns about that whatsoever, because one of the concerns I have about zombie fiction is when they rely too much on the shocking gore aspects. That’s not really the point of “Walking Dead,” so to a certain extant, I think it will work better at AMC-because it forces people not to rely on that stuff. As far as “Walking Dead” not having teeth on AMC, if you’ve ever seen [certain episodes of] “Mad Men” or “Breaking Bad,” they push a lot of boundaries as far as content goes.
Darabont’s “The Mist” is a good model for how this series might play out, and that’s exciting. Darabont has a knack for squeezing character into slower storylines, something that should serve a TV series well. Hopefully it won’t be as cryptic as “Mad Men,” but I’ll settle for anything that attempts to take zombies a notch above parody.

He said at the end of the interview that they can’t use the f-word.
That kind sucks.
One of the best bits was from issue #64:
“Mother fuckers. They’re going to feel pretty stupid when they find out.”
“Find out what?”
“They’re fucking with the wrong people.”
