Robert Luketic to Direct THE EXPENDABELLES, Plus the First Plot Details on the All-Female Actioner Emerge

Over a year ago, we reported that the Millennium Films all-female actioner, The ExpendaBelles, landed Legally Blonde scribes Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah Lutz.  Now, it looks like the screenwriters will reunite with that film’s director, as Robert Luketic has reportedly come on board.  Although this picture was originally set up to be a women’s answer to Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables movie series, some feminist fans may not be too happy with the film’s logline.  Hit the jump for more.

robert-luketic-the-expendabellesHere’s the synopsis of The ExpendaBelles, courtesy of Deadline:

When America’s Navy SEALs are wiped out trying to penetrate the island lair of a deadly despot who has captured one of the world’s top nuclear scientists, it becomes clear that there is no such thing as the right man for the job and that this is a mission so impossible that only women can handle it. The only way in: some of the world’s deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call-girls shipped in by private plane to satisfy a dictator–and instead save the scientist and the day.

“High-class call-girls”?  Not exactly what the feminist fans were looking for (if they were looking forward to this movie at all), but it does fall in line with similar fare like Legally Blonde and Miss Congeniality.  While I’m sure the ladies will ultimately kick all kinds of ass in the picture, it’s a shame that the writers decided to go with the lowest common denominator route of using sex as the reason for these deadly operatives’ success.  I’ll stick with The Heat 2, thank you.  Casting on The ExpendaBelles is expected to begin soon as the film is scheduled to kick off production this summer.

“some of the world’s deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call-girls”

    PUUUUUKE.

I’m really hoping this has no relation to the actual “female Expendables” movie, and it will be completely undermined if “The Expendabelles” comes out first. Also, Robert Luketic hasn’t made a good movie since Legally Blonde, so that cache ran out a long time ago.

Legally Blonde wasn’t even a good movie. Reese Witherspoon is one of the worst actresses alive.

Studios unwilling to actually have the guts to make an all out action film that stars women. Shocking. So instead they hire a sub-par director whose films include Killers and Win a Date w Ted Hamilton and go for the comedy/action route. I’ll pass on this one. What a waste.

At least they’re high class hookers. I was hoping for some lowly street walkers.

The title is the only kinda amusing thing about this project. It’s an only joke that should’ve stayed like that.

So is this related in any way to The Expendables franchise? Is it the same universe? Or are these people setting themselves up for an IP lawsuit?

Considering they already had a female team mate in the second one, I think the expendables is pretty much all races and sexes. So it’s kind of hilarious that we need a separate female branch when Stallone’s included a female character as part of the team.

great. sounds really special. watch this be a disaster of epic proportions. really hope all the stars people really wanted to be in this when it was first announced (sigourney weaver, pam grier etc.) stay far away from this.

  • Tom

That is the most cringe worthy plot synopsis I have ever read.

  • YodaRocks

what happened to that movie which was supposed to star Gina Carrano, Sharni Winson, Jeri Ryan and Siguorney Weawer?

  • Jan

    Paranoia was brilliant.

    • Steven

Was it ? I didn’t know anyone had seen it.

What a terrible f***king name for a movie. Is this any relation to the female Expendables we heard of a while back? Or is this an action/comedy rip off? Stop going the action/comedy route and take it seriously. If you want the audience to take a movie with ass kicking women in it, hire Tarantino and Uma Thurman.

  • DoobieDave

OF COURSE it’s called the Expendabelles…barf. The only way this could even remotely work is if they make it a full on screwball comedy just with crazy action. But even then it would still be terrible.

  • This Film Sounds Horrendous!

    This sounds awful.

LMMFAO! It’s funny how people say it sucks now. I bet when they cast this some of you will act like you always liked it. Because now everybody likes how the Ninja Turtles look, but few months back they wanted to burn Hollywood/Michael Bay to the ground. I don’t like rom/coms but hot chicks in action count me in!

  • AaronS12

God, this literally sounds terrible already. It sounds like something The Asylum would make. At least with The Expendables, it was that fun kind of silly and just brainless action fun. You go into those films and just watch the awesome 80s/90s/00′s action stars say cheesy one lines and blow stuff up/shoot at enemies etc; and get the villain. Even those plot lines, although, simplistic and tame, were still fun and were a throw-back to a lot of 80s movies.

    They should have followed that in some way with this. Have a fun, high octane story with stars such as: Sigourney Weaver, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Linda Hamilton, Michelle Yeoh, Michelle Rodriquez, Uma Thurman, Gina Carano, Kate Beckinsale, Famke Janssen etc; etc;

Could have made an awesome action movie featuring some of the best renowned actresses who have done extremely well in the action genre but instead, it looks like we are getting something tasteless and horrid.
