While director Robert Rodriguez has been touting 2010’s Machete as the first in a planned trilogy for quite some time now, I wasn’t exactly holding my breath for the franchise to come to fruition. This past August, Rodriguez said he was waiting on scripts for both Sin City 2 and Machete 2, and now it looks like the latter is geared up and ready to go. Rodriguez is readying Machete Kills with producer Alexander Rodnyansky, and star Danny Trejo is currently in talks to wield his machete once again. Hit the jump for more, including the storyline for Machete Kills.machete-danny-trejo-imageDeadline reports that an April start date is being eyed for the film, which finds Trejo’s Machete recruited by the U.S. Government to “take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space.” Though a similar sinister plot was hatched by one Dr. Evil, the goofiness and B-level quality of the story is kind of the point. Many from the original cast from Machete are expected to return, given that they weren’t brutally murdered in the 2010 flick. That film was, of course, born out of a fake trailer created for the Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino mashup Grindhouse.Rodriguez has previously stated that Machete Kills would be followed by the franchise finale Machete Kills Again. If this sequel does well (the first film made $44 million against a budget of $10.5 million), it’s safe to assume that Rodriguez will work to get the conclusion made. Then again, this is the same guy that has been promising Sin City 2 for years. We're still waiting. Here’s the trailer for Machete:machete_poster_01
